"From the initial estimates to the final touches at the conclusion of a day's work, KK and Mr. Garcia performed with efficiency, proficiency and professionalism in this project. I was impressed with his attention to detail in the preparation phase, selection of materials and considerable prep to avert damages to grass, sprinkler system, in place masonry, fencing, wood gate and brick work of house, using fabric and stone, and in the workmanship exhibited by his work crew, with meticulous attention to a professionally finished product, using the latest materials and technology and a crew that understands the difference between doing a job and a job well done. I have no hesitation or reservation in recommending Mr. Garcia's firm for any homeowner needing his services. Both of the photos I planned to upload are "too large and can't be uploaded." Too bad. They are outstanding examples of how a 5' by 60' concrete walkway should look."

"The basement king was a pleasure to work with. His knowledge is unmatched in the Texas area for sure. I received multiple quotes and talked to multiple companies and he was the best. He's passionate about his work and the manner in which it's done. If he says something, it happens. An added benefit was their cleanliness. Usually a job site of this size and complexity is a mess, but not with the basement kings. 10/10!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Limewash can be removed from brick, but the method of removal will depend on how long the limewash has been on the brick. If the limewash has fully dried—which happens after about five days—you’ll need to use a diluted muriatic acid mixture to remove it. If there are multiple coats of limewash, you may need to apply the acid mixture several times to fully remove it from the brick.

You will repoint over a fraction of the old mortar, but you should scrape away 1/2 to 1 inch of mortar from the joints before repointing. Otherwise, the repointing is only masking the weakened mortar instead of actually replacing it, which could put your chimney at risk of bigger, more expensive damages later on.

The white stains you see on your bricks are likely efflorescence, which is salt and lime buildup. To remove efflorescence stains, simply brush them away with a stiff brush. For larger, more stubborn stains, scrub the stains with a water-detergent solution.

Spalling brick is not uncommon, but it does indicate a serious issue. It can be caused by water damage, an intense freeze-thaw cycle, or something else. Painted bricks can be susceptible to spalling, as the paint doesn’t allow the porous material of the brick to breathe, which can trap moisture. Spalling should always be addressed immediately before more serious structural damage occurs.

Do not use super glue to hang lights on brick unless you want your lights up year-round. Hot glue is a better choice because it’s easily removable with a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Super glue is very hard to remove, and you could tear off parts of the brick in the removal process.
