The owners, Ken and Kirk, have worked together for thirty consecutive years successfully building business. “We hold ourselves, and our team, to the highest of standards.” Smith-Bard Constructors brings what is often lacking in business today, communication, reliability, and complete honesty. Giving the project owners and clients an experience refreshingly reminiscent of a bygone era. Smith-Bard Constructors offer a diverse range of equipment for land clearing, site preparation, brush clearing, grading, excavating, heavy tree removal, and mulching. They continue to invest in the most current technologies like Topcon GPS 3D site mapping. These Technologies drive efficiency, increase accuracy and project completion times helping us meet the demands of the most challenging projects. We are eager to speak with you about your company or municipality and learn about upcoming projects or just have a conversation about Smith-Bard Constructors and how we can work together helping your project run smoothly to completion and surpass expectations!

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Palm trees aren’t much different than your typical tree removal. Removing a palm tree is a standard procedure as long as pros have the proper tools and supplies. For DIYers, however, there are some risks associated with palm tree removal. Palm trees have spiky fronds, bark, and patches of hefty wood. So, it’s best to let an experienced tree service pro remove a palm tree.

You can use a felling ax to chop down a tree by following the same prep and steps as a chainsaw, but be prepared to use some muscle. For trees bigger than 7 inches in diameter, it can take some time and serious strength to cut down a tree using just an ax.

A tree growing close to a house can cause problems, but cutting it down isn’t always the best solution. Trees planted close to your home could damage your foundation as their roots grow. In addition, they can drop large branches on your house, make it easier for critters and insects to access your home, and encourage mold growth. But if the tree has been there for a long time, it may not pose a risk to your foundation, and it could be more beneficial—not to mention cheaper—to strategically trim it instead. Your best bet is to consult an arborist for advice.

If executed correctly your tree should survive after being transplanted to a new spot. However, effective transplanting requires six months, careful root pruning, safe transport to the new location, and replanting in prime soil conditions. You’ll also need an appropriately sized root ball for a complete tree transplant. A good rule of thumb is that, for every inch in diameter, your tree’s root ball needs to be around 11 inches. So a tree with a diameter of six inches needs a root ball of approximately 66 inches.

A tree can grow back from its stump, but full regrowth is unlikely (especially for more stubborn conifer trees). Instead, trees are more likely to send up a number of shoots from the dead stump, which will try to develop into primary stems over time. In other words, it will start to look increasingly bushy. The goal of killing and drying out a tree stump is to prevent that from happening, as well as make the stump easier to completely remove.
