"I was looking to improve the energy efficiency of my existing home and opted to change out old blown in insulation for foam spray insulation. I took time to investigate cost and options and requested quotes from various companies. I am a family physician and if you know doctors, we donâ t usually jump the gun unless we are well informed. Brav Co Energy Solutions representative came to evaluate my home for a quote. I was impressed by his knowledge of the product. He took measurements (which none of the other companies had done), provided a pamphlet of the actual foam product that would be applied (I researched it and it does have 5 star reviews) and also sent the men who would be doing the insulation to inspect my attic and ensure the foam spray insulation could be completed as I had requested. I have low attic ceiling space and there were very snug corners that I had been told would not be reachable by other companies. Brav Co Energy Solutionâ s men came, inspected and informed me their equipment would reach every corner of my attic. After a full inspection, I received a quote which was comparable to the other companies and given the thoroughness of the inspection that was done by Brav Co Energy, I opted to go with their team. I was amazed at their efficiency to remove all the old insulation and debri. My attic appears cleaner allowing visibility of all my air conditioning duct work, wiring, and plumbing. The foam insulation (and yes, I physically went up in my attic and inspected it, from corner to corner) is seamless and encases the full attic space including the attic space above my garage and above a very tight front room. Brav Co Energy also provided a warranty on the foam installation. I can feel the difference in the cooling and heating of the house- the unit does not turn on as often and does not sustain on. I get weekly usage emails from my electricity company and this month I am predicted to considerably save on electricity costs. I highly recommend Brav Co Energy Solutions and will keep them in mind for future homes I purchase."

"We met with 3 different companies to advise on getting solar panels. The first 2 companies basically just told us what size system we could get based on state and federal tax rebate levels. Heard an advertisement for Sunpro on radio and decided to call them; turned out to be a good decision. Kara with Sunpro was extremely informative and had a nice package put together for us to review. She even researched our home and had an idea of how much production we could expect with the recommended solar panels. Even after selecting Sunpro, I called Kara with questions about things I'd heard from others or something I forgot to ask. I never felt like I was a burden and she always returned my calls if I had to leave a message. The complete team with Sunoro were professional and eager to help. Satisfied with new solar system and looking forward to enjoying savings on electric bills.

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Cellular shades, also known as honeycomb shades, are the most energy-efficient and insulating window treatments. Their honeycomb structure is made of soft fabric that forms layered cell pockets. These pockets trap air, creating a thermal barrier that reduces heat loss in the winter and blocks heat gain in the summer. For even greater insulation, consider double- or triple-cell varieties. Side-tracked cellular shades, which seal the edges of the window frame, can further minimize air leaks and maximize energy efficiency.

When temperatures are too cold, it can keep ice from melting, and products like ice melt and rock salt are ineffective. Water turns to ice in temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice melts on its own when temperatures reach above 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ice melt loses effectiveness in temperatures below -25 degrees Fahrenheit, and rock salt works in temperatures 5 degrees Fahrenheit and warmer.

While there are many different kinds of insulation, spray foam, blown-in, foam board, and batt and roll are the four types you’re most likely to see. That doesn’t mean they’re alike, though. Each one varies drastically in terms of cost, materials used, and how they’re installed—not to mention, how well they limit heat transfer.

If you have access to the foundation walls, adding spray foam insulation to your existing unfinished basement or crawl space is straightforward. Replacing existing insulation in your unfinished attic space is possible after removing the old insulation. However, spray foam insulating an existing wall after the drywall is in place isn’t possible unless you remove most of the drywall.

A-frame houses pose specific challenges that can make heating difficult. Their open concept design with high ceilings can lead to a colder lower floor and a warmer upper floor. A ceiling fan that pushes warm air down or pulls cold air up, depending on the season, can easily counteract temperature issues. Additionally, certain types of heating do better in these homes than others. For example, heated floors tend to be more practical and energy efficient than baseboard heating.
