"Owner Neely Willeford and his crew did a great job! When I was trying to get estimates on roof replacement a few months following April's hail storm, Great Built was one of the few companies that responded promptly and sent a representative to give me a quote. Other companies actually quoted me over the phone, based on minimal information, or said, "We'll do it for whatever your insurance gives you." I know all the companies were swamped, but it gave me the impression that they were too busy to give my house adequate attention. Great Built's representative (Gary) was very nice and did a thorough walk-through, got up on the roof, took measurements, discussed materials with us, and never once asked what the insurance was giving us. He provided a clear written quote with two options (one to replace the shingles we had, one for an upgrade, as we requested). No pressure. And the quote for replacing the roof with simliar shingles came in slightly under what the insurance paid; we opted to upgrade to a 50-year shingle and pay the $1500 difference out-of-pocket. We decided to go with Great Built and began working with Neely to get the work scheduled. He told me up front that it would be about 4-6 weeks, due to other jobs in the pipeline. It actually ended up being on the short end of that waiting period. He and/or his son Brandon communicated with me constantly to set up the time, to arrange delivery of materials, etc. Neely also thoroughly explained the drip-edge we'd opted to include and wanted to be very sure we would be comfortable with the appearance of it. (We were; it looks just fine.) Once the work started (right on schedule, bright and early the day we had agreed on), Neely and Brandon were checking on the work, communicating with the crew, explaining the steps to us, and getting our feedback on decisions for the two days it took to replace the roof (and three skylights). Neely even drove to Kerrville to pick up a skylight after the company he ordered from in San Antonio did not provide the third skylight (though he'd bought and paid for it the day before!). Work progressed quickly and the crew seemed to know what they were doing. Another thing I appreciated: the two days they were working were HOT and Neely said up front that the crew would arrive early (7AM), take a long break midday (several hours for lunch and during the hottest part of the day), and then work as long as the light was good. I appreciated that he didn't expect his crew to be working on a scalding rooftop during the hottest part of the day. Also, the day after they finished, he came to inspect the work, had them take care of a couple of small issues I had sent him photos of (a couple of wonky-ish shingles), and then decided that the clean-up in the yard wasn't as good as it should have been. (Frankly, it was already fairly good.) He sent another man to do a very thorough sweep for nails and such and in the month since the roof went on we've found maybe 2 nails in a large yard. Neely also brought me the warranty information (which he sat down and explained to me how to activate) and the completion certificate. We've had one rainfall since the roofing and no known problems with the roof. But it wasn't a lot of rain and it didn't last very long; I would like to have a good, heavy rainfall so that we can be sure, but it looks like the roof is solid and there are no issues with leaks or anything else. Furthermore, I believe Neely would take care of any problem that did arise. Nothing in the way he's handled the whole project would lead me to believe otherwise. In conclusion, we were very satisfied with Great Built Roofing and Construction, and enjoyed working with Neely and Brandon. Both were very accessible and responsive. Considering what a stressful project it can be to have a roof ripped off and replaced, they made it as smooth and stress-free as possible. The roof looks great and we are happy."

"

Because of the May storms we had to wait 3 months to have our roof redone.  Many Angie's List A rated contractors did not call us back in this timeframe.  Bill and Theresa told us from the beginning that it would be months before they could get to us.  Bill came out immediately and gave us a quote for a repair of a large skylight and the roof around it.  We called him back to get a quote on a total re-roof and new domes for 5 skylights figuring with the age of the house we would have to do so soon anyway.  Bill told us again that it would be some time before they got to us.  Since only one other A rated contractor communicated with us and gave us an initial quote we went with Action Roofing.

Once we finally had our appointment the crew immediately got started and worked continuously until the job was done (two days). They were hardworking and pleasant. Action's skylight guy came the next day to put new domes on the skylights. The small thing I told Bill was that the crew chief should have introduced himself at the beginning of the job so that all communications could take place with one individual.  Angel promptly introduced himself but by that time the job was almost done.

We are happy with the work and would recommend Action.  Theresa is very responsive.  Takes care of all the phone calls and office.  All together a good team.

"Once the work started, the new  roof was installed  in a couple of days. Although it is against our association rules, they hammered  a company sign into my lawn without asking permission.  I subsequently got a letter of reprimand from the management company.   Moreover from the beginning it was good that I was on site to prevent problems.  The truck delivering the material would have damaged the driveway had I not stopped it from pulling all the way in.  I signed a paper allowing them to pull part way in, but I was told this would require  extra work moving the materials from  a lower level on the roof.  Then I saw they intended to throw the old materials on a tarp laid on my lawn and bushes.  As it was, the lawn was suffering from the heat and even a light lawn mower had previously caused severe problems.  Again they let me know I was causing their workers extra work when I asked them to use the dumpster they had already pulled into my driveway.  During the installation, a bucket slid down the roof and crashed onto my glass deck table, shattering it into a thousand pieces.  Material from the bucket along with glass pieces are still being found (a month later).  The foreman said they would pay for it and take it out of his pay. We looked around town and found a similar but smaller glass table which I picked up and assembled. After the workers  left I noticed many problems.  The gutter was bent from a ladder they used to gain access to the roof.  Tar they used was on the gate to my side lawn.  The roof at one edge was inexplicably raised. The gutters were filled with debris and would have not functioned if it rained, and the skylight had old pieces of felt protruding into the ceiling opening  and visible from inside.  The problems were fixed only after I called and complained.
The only other point I'd like to add is minor in actual dollars, but nevertheless points to a problem with this company.  They asked if they could use a small broom to clean the debris in the gutters.  Once the task was completed, it was obvious that the broom was destroyed.  The foreman told me he would buy me a new small broom.  He repeated this offer again when he came to fix some of the problems.  When I was called by the company to see if I was happy, I told them about never receiving a replacement for the broom.  Yesterday I was called by the company and told the foreman would be by in 30 minutes to drop off the broom.  We were going out but waited an hour, no one ever came.  While these folks seem very nice, it's frustrating to deal with a business that depends on customer's  complaints to get the job done right.  It hasn't rained since the roof was installed, and frankly I'm a bit concerned.

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

Ceiling costs depend on many factors, such as the material used and size, but coffered ceilings are considered one of the more expensive ceiling options. If you want to install a coffered ceiling but have a limited budget, consider using plywood instead of hardwood—it costs $2–$4.50 per square foot, while hardwood can be as much as $20 per square foot.

Yes, you can install skylights on an existing roof, and it’s a common service that many homeowners opt for, especially on older homes built when skylights weren’t as prevalent. The installation process will be a bit more involved, and the design and planning process will take longer, meaning you’ll pay more to install a skylight on an existing roof than you would in new construction. The process involves cutting a hole in the roof, moving rafters, if necessary, and installing and sealing around the skylight.

Common skylight issues include leaks, condensation between glass panes, damaged seals, and cracks in the glazing. Regular exposure to weather elements can lead to these problems, requiring timely attention to preserve the integrity of the skylight and the surrounding roof structure.

Fixed skylights are by far the most popular type. Because skylights can be pretty high up on your ceiling, fixed (rather than operable) skylights remove some maintenance from the equation. Plus, you don’t have to constantly worry if you shut your skylight fully the last time you opened it or if you’re going to find a leak later on during a rainy day.
