Often, this means inserting the tablet or pod into the detergent dispenser (and not in the bottom of the dishwasher). The most common reason for a smelly dishwasher is a dirty dishwasher filter. The filter is responsible for catching food while your machine is running to prevent clogs. If your dishwasher is not energy-efficient or is older than 10 years, you should also consider replacing it. Repairing an older model may be more expensive than replacing it with something newer and more energy- or water-efficient.

When deciding whether to repair or replace your dishwasher, you must consider its age and the repair cost. If your dishwasher is more than eight years old, replace it to avoid additional repairs in the near future. Similarly, if you need multiple repairs over a short time, consider purchasing a new one altogether, depending on its warranty. It’s best to repair your dishwasher when the fix cost is less than 50% of the cost of a new dishwasher, provided it is less than eight years old.

A clogged air gap can cause a dishwasher not to drain. There are, however, other potential issues that can lead to improper drainage. For example, if you have attached the air gap to a garbage disposal and forgotten to remove the knockout plug, wastewater may backflow into the dishwasher.
