"Dennis of Dominion Fences and Decking came out to give an estimate on enclosing our back yard to provide privacy of the road and for the pool we were havng installed.  It was refreshing to speak with Dennis and I was particularly happy with the estimate I was given compared to other over-blown estimates I had recieved.  Dennis's proposal was fair and reasonable. The approximate cost does not reflect the fact that my wife and I changed our minds about how far we wanted the stone wall to extend off of the house.  Originally it was 15 ft, then we changed it to 25 ft which meant that all of the fencing that was installed had to be taken down and moved.  Had we not changed our minds, the total cost would have been $6,800. So adding the additional 10 feet of stone wall and moving about 120 ft of fencing to include poles and all was the additional cost. The crew that Dennis has are hard working individuals, and once they got started it was a thing of beauty to watch.  We had some delays because of all of the rain and cold weather we had this winter, but once it was clear enough to work, Dennis' crew was back out working. The fence was stained, the gates were fabricated, and they even installed some game fencing on my split rail fencing for free.  Overall my wife and I are extremely pleased with the results and could not be more happy. I will use Dominion Fences and Decking again to do more work for me.

"Astar did an awesome job! We originally called them to have our flaking bathtub refinished, they advised us that the tile should be refinished as well and the price of $500 to do the whole thing was great. When they finished we explained that we were looking for professionals to repair and repaint or deck, and replace our fence as well. They split the jobs into two separate jobs and gave us a great price on each. We now have a wonderful new fence, a nice deck and a working bathtub."

"Rocky was on time when he came out to survey the work I needed done. He offered suggestions on how to repair the rotted fascia and wooden beam area which led to a cost savings and did not require me to hire a roofer. He quickly provided me with an estimate. He was working on another job at the time, but kept me up to date on his schedule and when he'd be able to start my job. During the conduct of the work, Rocky was timely (he arrived and left at a reasonable hour), courteous, professional, innovative, meticulous, extremely neat (he cleaned up every day before he left), kept us informed on his schedule (i.e., he let us know if he was not coming usually because of rain), and gladly performed the additional tasks we added onto his plate. The overhangs/house extensions are 18-20 feet high, probably 30+ feet long, 10+ feet wide, are constructed of wood, and have six wooden beams that go from the front through the house and to the back. Rocky hand painted both the front and back overhangs with a brush on a ladder. Any cleaned up any paint that dripped onto the patio. The fascia and beam repairs were very close to the edge of the swimming pool and could not be easily reached with the ladder alone. Rocky built a platform that he extended over a portion of the pool, counter weighted it, and placed his ladder on the platform while he was doing the repairs and painting. When he was done with the work, he disassembled the platform and hauled it away. Rocky took down two old ceiling fans that we had over the back patio and hauled them away. He installed two new fans and get them set up and working. One of the fans would not work so he got on the phone with the technical support group for the fan manufacturer to try to see how to fix the issue. We ended up having him take down the one fan that would not work properly(which we returned) and then put up the new replacement fan. Once again, he made sure both fans were working before he moved onto another task, and he hauled away the boxes from both fans. Having had a lot of work done at the house over the past year, I was impressed with Rocky's neatness. He cleaned up every night, consolidating ladders, paint cans, tarps, and other materials into one inconspicuous location before he left. He did not leave any trash laying around the yard, hoses were recoiled, paint drippings were removed, and when he left we didn't find nails or screws or anything else laying on the ground. We have identified other tasks that need to be done both inside and outside the house, and while my husband could do them, his first response was to "Call Rocky. He'll do a better job than me". Thank you Rocky!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Composite decking might cost more upfront, but it delivers value in terms of durability. Unlike wood, composite material resists common deck problems such as rotting, fading, warping, and all the other things you don’t want a deck to do. The extra processes lead to a higher price tag, but you’ll save big in maintenance costs down the road.

Yes, it is generally safe to have a fire pit on a deck, but you must adhere to building codes and take several safety precautions. For both built-in and freestanding models, you must use a heat-resistant barrier, such as a fire pit pad or heat shield, between the pit and the deck. Additionally, consider the weight of the fire pit and ensure your deck can structurally support it, reinforcing it if necessary. The fire pit must also be positioned a safe distance from your house, particularly from materials like vinyl siding, to prevent heat damage.

PVC decking can get slippery when wet because it’s made from plastic. However, composite and wood decking can also be slippery when wet. It’s best to wear shoes with grippy soles when walking on a wet deck, no matter the material, and to be extra cautious not to slip and fall down.

Expect to spend around $10,000 to $11,000 to replace a 20-by-20-foot deck. Using high-end materials like composite or exotic hardwoods can drive up the cost, as can custom features and design elements. You can also expect to pay more than average if your deck replacement requires a site evaluation or if you need the work done during the busy season.

It is possible to pressure wash your deck, but it’s usually best to leave the work to a professional for two main reasons. First, power washers are expensive, and you can avoid high upfront costs by hiring a deck washing pro instead. Second, you must be careful to use the correct setting to avoid damaging your deck material. You can only clean soft woods like pine with a wide spray and a low pressure; otherwise, the water will leave unpleasant marks on your deck. Hard woods, composite material, and metal can stand up to increasingly higher water pressures.
