Small jobs welcome

"Dennis Smelly of LTC Brick and Stone did an outstanding job on our stone repair job and we highly recommend him. Dennis has been in the business a long time and has built the reputation that consistently earns him a 5 star rating. He is punctual and will let you know if he is running late for the appointment. Dennis was immediately able to determine that the workmanship on the stone installation was poor; the previous contractor used too much sand in the mortar so that it was not going to last. Before he started, Dennis dropped by to pick up a sample of the stone so that he could match it with the stone he needed to purchase. He was more concerned than we were about matching the exact color of the mortar! Looking at all the repairs now, you would never know that it ever needed repair. Itâ s beautiful and now, will last for years to come."

Small jobs welcome

"I hired Pafford Land & Home to clear 4 acres of overgrown brush and trees on my North East Texas property. As a new landowner, I needed a reliable team to prep the site for fencing and pasture use. Chad provided a free estimate within a day, explaining their eco-friendly forestry mulching process, which grinds debris into nutrient-rich mulch on-site?no burning or hauling fees. The $4,500 price (~$1,125/acre) was fair, with a local discount included. The crew arrived on time with top-notch equipment, clearing dense brush and small trees in two days while preserving select oaks. The land was left smooth, with no ruts or stumps?just enriched soil ready for use. Chad?s daily check-ins and tips on erosion control were invaluable. Professional, insured, and BBB-accredited, this family-owned business knows East Texas land. Highly recommend for land clearing!"

Fire Pit Installation questions, answered by experts

A fireplace hearth is necessary in most areas per building codes, especially for gas and wood-burning fireplaces. Electric fireplaces may not require a hearth, so check local building codes or ask a pro for guidance if you’re leaning toward electric. A fireplace hearth can decrease the risk of flying embers creating a fire and burning your home down. That’s why fireproof material, like tile, is used for the hearth.

The best way to store firewood is outdoors and away from your home, shed, or garage. Stacking wood against your house can be a fire hazard and attract unwanted pests. Store your firewood under a shelter where it's protected from rain and snow but still exposed to sunlight and open air. You can lay a tarp on top to help keep moisture out.

Depending on who’s doing the estimating, about 22,000 to 25,000 chimney fires happen each year in the United States. Given the fact that millions of Americans have fireplaces (and chimneys), that means chimney fires aren’t exactly common—but they’re not rare, either. Since they’re so dangerous, it’s important to take precautions to prevent them.

After a house fire, you should not reenter your home unless the fire crew has told you it’s safe to do so. In the longer term, you should not attempt to make repairs to the house on your own. Professional crews are trained to clean up after a fire (including smoke and soot damage), dry out any water damage from the firefighter crews, and make the necessary structural, plumbing, and electrical repairs—and this is all likely covered by insurance.

If a light switch is off, it’s very unlikely to cause a fire. For a fire to start, the switch has to be on, activating an electrical current, and the wiring must be faulty. However, the malfunctioning light switch could cause an intermittent current to move across the electrical wire. This issue could become a fire hazard with another device connected to the wire. You should replace the bad light switch as soon as you notice it or call an electrician.
