"Horrible! 2 guys worked on the house and had no idea what they were doing. Their job was terrible and I had to have them redo it multiple times and tried to get my contractor out to see what a mess they had done and she came twice the whole 10 months. Finally had enough and called the owner and asked him to come see the job that they had done, he agreed that the job was not done well and promised to fix everything. 10 months later I’m here reaching out to him for him to tell me he will be sending someone out to finish after he gets his results from COVID. This company has made me so stressed out, lose sleep and completely exhausted trying to get my house back from Imelda. Please save yourself from a complete nightmare and do not hire this company!!"

No, you don’t always have to remove old wallpaper before applying a new layer. However, you should pull off the existing wallpaper if it’s cracked, peeling, or in poor condition. Even if the walls are in good condition and primed well, that third layer of wallpaper could cause problems with adhesion. Unless you like bubbling paint and peeling wallpaper as an interior design choice, it’s better to remove at least one existing layer before adding any more to a wall.

Wallpaper lasts an average of around 15 years, but there is some variance. The type of wallpaper matters, as vinyl wallpaper tends to last the longest—sometimes 20 years or more—while a peel-and-stick wallpaper, which is the easiest to install for DIYers, will usually only last for around five years. Exposure to high humidity, smoke, and UV rays from sunlight can also limit the lifespan of your wallpaper, as can heavy traffic in the installation area.

You may end up with extra wallpaper once your project is finished. Hang on to that wallpaper, as you may need to use it to patch up areas that get damaged later on. If you have a lot of excess wallpaper, try getting creative with it. You can use it to line the inside of a cabinet or drawers, for example.

The simple nature of peel and stick wallpaper means it should come off much more easily than traditional wallpaper that is glued to your walls. You’ll still want to work slowly and carefully to avoid tearing it, but most peel and stick wallpaper should come off without a chemical agent to loosen it.
