"I needed a wheelchair ramp built in a very short period of time. I signed up with home advisor and I got 3 hits. I sent a request to all three but they were the highest rated and the first and only ones to respond. Nancy talked to me that night and the ramp was installed 2 days later. Excellent customer service and Excellent craftsmanship. Thank you Nancy and Rodger for the pleasant experience. We will get back to you on the carport."

"Mr. Ledger did a wonderful job on all of our projects. He installed a tin backsplash, assembled and installed cabinets and shelves, installed a tile border in the bathroom, added crown molding to the kitchen cabinets and bookcases, installed closet organizers and mounted butcherblock to the island. Mr. Ledger was courteous, professional, provided an estimate and timeline. We will certainly call him again!"

"Fixed did an amazing job. This project involved carpentry, plumbing, electrical and the installation of cabinets and decking. They were skilled and pleasant. They did not cut corners or complain about the cold weather or "old house" issues they found. We recommend them highly and will use them again."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

For the best results, stay off of your deck for at least 48 hours after sealing it. Giving the sealant at least two full days to cure ensures it can fully penetrate the wood, giving you the most protection from sun and weather damage later on. Walking on the deck too soon can prevent it from properly curing and cause your deck to weather prematurely.

It's okay to walk on a newly painted deck after about four to six hours as long as the weather has been dry. Be sure to wait at least 24 hours before you place any outdoor furniture or grills on a freshly painted deck, though.

The best material for your deck depends on several factors, including your budget, location, aesthetic preferences, and the level of maintenance you’re willing to do. Wood decking, like redwood, ipe, cedar, and pine, lasts the longest, but it’s more expensive and requires more upkeep than composite and synthetic decking.

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

Pressure-treated wood contains preservatives that give the material internal protection from rot and pests. Untreated lumber won’t last more than a few years unless you choose a more expensive wood, like cedar, that naturally stands up well to moisture. Composite decking can outlast wood but is more expensive and doesn’t look as natural. Keep in mind that you’ll need to seal any exterior wood product to protect it from the elements and other forms of external damage.
