I've lived in Dallas for only a little while, but it already feels like home, I started this company because I wanted to be my own boss and build my own future. I am easygoing, I like to have fun with the process!. I most want my customers to know I always put myself in my customers shoes, treat their home like my own.

The company provided a quick and fair quotation using photos and measurements that I provided of the deck along with a description of the services I was requiring.  Upon my acceptance of the quote, the work was scheduled that week.

When the technician arrived, he assessed that due to the previous staining job being performed on wet pressure treated wood that we would need to use a different type of stain product than was originally quoted.  The difference in price was ~$50 and we mutually agreed to the change in scope.

The technician performed the cleaning on the first day.  The cleaning consisted of a blower to remove any large debris and a pressure wash with a cleaning solution.

The staining occurred on day two and was applied with a gas-powered sprayer.  We had chosen a Sherman Williams Solid Color Traditional Russet Superdeck Stain.  As Good As New offered a 3 year warranty for this product.

Upon completion, the technician and I walked the job and looked for missed spots.  We found none.  He then gave detailed instructions on how to care for the new stain and told me to call if we had any issues during the warranty period.

Overall a very positive experience with As Good As New.

"Excellent.  He came out the same day I called (which was a Saturday). I had some missing shingles on my roof as well as some corner areas damaged from a storm that needed repair. He was very clear about his rates and what he could fix.  Everything turned out just as he said.  I will definitely call on him again

"DFW Deck and FEnce had good ratings on Angie's List so I wanted to use them. I left a phone message, but call was never returned. I also left a Text message, but there was no response.  I called again a day or so later, and this time the owner answered and came to do the estimate. He was very nice and professional and obviously knew what he was talking about. He said he would send a bid that night.   After a couple of days, I did not receive the bid, so I emailed him to ask for it. By this time I felt like I was "chasing" them, and I prefer not to work with companies like that. When I did get the bid, it was $300-400 higher than the other estimates.    This is the response that I got from DFW Fence along with the price:   "Right now I'm leaving the estimated start date open for several reason.  Mother nature controls my schedule and in some cases may back my calendar up for 2-3 weeks.  I also schedule jobs based on acceptance of the estimate.  Currently I have over 60 estimates open from the last 3 months and if they all decide to do the work I could be backed up for several month.  As my calendar sits right now I'm about 8 weeks booked up if I stay on schedule.  If there is a way to get started earlier on your project I might be able to."     So when Affordable Fence said they could start the following Monday, and Superior gave me days a few weeks later, I went with them! Plus they were cheaper.  Kenny Dugan of DFW Deck and Fence is a nice person but may have too much work on his hands for now."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Deck skirting shouldn’t touch the ground, especially if you have a wood deck, which is vulnerable to moisture. Ideally, you should leave at least 3/4 of an inch of space between the deck skirting and the ground for more ventilation. Pros also recommend that you incorporate about 1 square foot of space for ventilation for the underside of the deck to every 150 square feet of decking. Proper ventilation prevents mold growth and rot that can damage your deck.

When building an outdoor or deck gate, it's crucial to use durable wood that can withstand harsh weather conditions like sunlight, rain, wind, and snow. Redwood and cedar are excellent choices as they naturally resist decay. While redwood is considered more elegant, cedar is a more affordable option. Other suitable woods include oak and pressure-treated pine, which is specifically treated to resist rot. Although some softwoods like pine are popular, untreated softwoods such as pine and spruce should generally be avoided for outdoor projects because they are susceptible to damage from water, rot, and the sun. Ultimately, it's wise to consider your local climate when selecting the right wood for your gate.

While experienced DIYers may take on the challenge, hiring a licensed professional is often the best route, especially for larger or elevated structures. A local deck contractor is typically the best pro for the job, as they have specialized experience and are knowledgeable about local building codes, ensuring your deck is built safely and designed to last. Other professionals who can build a deck include general contractors and carpenters, who may be more readily available in some regions.

Yes, and in some cases, frozen ground may improve the digging process for footings due to sturdier conditions. It’s easier than working in muddy conditions, which are more common in the spring. Contractors may use machinery that makes this step a breeze, so harder ground shouldn’t affect the building process.

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.
