"Last summer, even with the AC running constantly and the thermostat set at 72 degrees, the temperature inside the house would reach 80 degrees or higher. This summer is much better; the thermostat is set to 70 degrees, and the house actually stays at 70. Our electric bills are also reflecting this improved energy efficiency. Thank you Dillon, NxT Level Insulation for the outstanding work and exceptional customer service."

"I got 4 bids. Koala was by far the most professional at inspection and estimate. Stayed in touch, showed up on schedule, did a great job and cleaned up after. Not the lowest estimate but I think I chose well."

"I wanted insulation blown in above the ceiling of my condo to lessen the noise from my neighbors above. Darren was very responsive and professional and knew exactly what I was looking for. The crew arrived on time, was very nice, and covered the house in plastic sheeting to protect everything from the incredible amount of dust created by drilling dozens of holes in the ceiling to shoot the insulation. Their subcontractor Robert arrived the next day to repair the holes and repaint the ceilings. He also was able to install can lights in my living room (separate job and quote from the job Attic Construction was doing). During installation of the lights, we discovered that some of the cavities that should have been filled by new insulation were not, due to a problem with the old insulation. One call to Darren and the insulation guys showed up early the next morning to take care of it. Robert the drywall guy and his helper Carlos did an amazing job repairing all the holes, you can't even tell that my ceiling looked like swiss cheese at one point. The reduction in sound coming from upstairs is noticeable due to the new insulation and I love my new lights. Be aware though that a job like this is incredibly messy and dusty but Attic Construction OC made it as easy as possible."

"David was friendly and gave a fair quote discussing challenges and solutions for our home and insulation job. He clearly discussed different options for insulating our home and prices for removal of the old batting and of old insulation and blowing in the new insulation. The work was scheduled efficiently and within our time frame. The insulation team that he used were prompt, polite, respectful of our home and easy to work with. They did the job in a tidy and efficient way. The whole process was relatively painless given the magnitude of the job. David and his office communicated well before and after the job. We are very pleased with the job completed by Efficient Home Solutions and would highly recommend them."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

If you have blown-in insulation, using an insulation vacuum will quickly and easily suck up all the insulation. Many come with built-in HEPA filters for added safety. While some people suggest breaking up large batts and feeding them into the vacuum, this can expose you to more fiberglass fibers. With batts and rolls, carefully removing them and placing them into garbage bags is a better process.

If you have bubble wrap lying around the house and you don’t care about the odd look, taping bubble wrap over a window is a very affordable way to insulate it. Another inexpensive option for insulating windows is to add new caulk around the glass. This step quickly cuts down on air drafts for older windows, and a tube of caulk only costs a few dollars. Adding plastic shrink film around the glass is another cost-effective option. You can purchase a kit of plastic film for a few dollars per window.

If you’re using faced insulation with paper, face the paper toward the inside of the room during the installation process.

A good way to remember this is that the paper should face the “warm side” as it’s the vapor barrier, meaning it should face toward where the heat will be coming from.

Mineral wool has an excellent life expectancy of up to 50 years, provided it's kept dry and free of pests. Compared to fiberglass, with a life span of 20 to 30 years, mineral wool stacks up well for long-term cost savings. Sheep wool maintains a similar life span to fiberglass, while estimates for hemp wool insulation life expectancies are all over the board, ranging anywhere from 20 to 100 years.

Traditional clapboard siding, particularly with panels made from wood, is not a significant insulator on its own. However, you can keep your home cooler in summer and warmer with "insulated clapboard siding," which is a type of vinyl clapboard siding with a built-in foam insulation. Consult a local siding contractor to determine whether insulated siding is right for your home.
