"Main water line ruptured we were without water. Winkle's responded to late evening call and came out next day and repaired, while pointing out the line had degraded (nothing external such as root caused the rupture) and suggested it would need replaced at some time in the future. We decided to proceed and they arrived on time, did an excellent job, replaced the old line and the old water meter as well, along with a small pin leak underneath the home's crawl space when connecting the new supply line. Very happy with their services, highly recommend."

You can and should vent the gas from your hot water heater to the outside of your home. Traditionally, these gases were vented back to other gas appliances, like stoves or furnaces, but many jurisdictions have outlawed this practice due to the risks it provides.

More commonly, incorrectly installed water heaters pose a real threat from carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks, water leaks, and even explosions. 

Most standard residential water heaters, which are typically around 40 gallons and use 240 volts and between 3,500 and 5,500 watts, require a 30-amp, two-pole circuit breaker. For smaller, point-of-use water heaters using 120 volts and between 1,500 and 3,000 watts, a 30-amp breaker is also often adequate. However, some models may have different needs; units that use more watts than average may require a 40-amp breaker, while smaller units might only need a 20-amp breaker. Newer, tankless, or more energy-efficient models can also require a higher amperage.   • Water Quality: If you notice rusty or discolored water from your hot water faucets, or a foul odor similar to rotten eggs or sulfur, it can signal internal corrosion.

  • Unusual Noises: Banging, rumbling, or popping sounds from the tank often mean sediment has built up, causing the unit to overheat.

  • Leaks: Any water pooling around the base of the tank or visible leaks are clear signs of failure.

  • Performance Issues: A decline in performance, such as water not getting hot enough, taking longer to heat up, low water pressure, or decreased efficiency, suggests the unit is struggling.
