"I had never met Trent before this job. I selected him because he came off as honest, he was local and seemed to be raised right and promised he would not stop until I was happy. He did not disappoint Trent was awesome to work with and his pricing was fair. He excavated for a llarge pool and stayed within level range throughout . Will call him for landscaping around the pool and and hillside excavation in a month. Highly recommended"

"It went great. Kevin is an 'owner operator' so I don't have to deal with a guy disconnected from the work coming it to check in once in a blue moon. He does stuff the right way. He communicates amazingly, we had some small 'additions' to the project that were fairly priced and didn't go much beyond the original quote (few hundred bucks on a 10k+ job). Also, these additions were caused by poor workmanship of my hardscapes company I had earlier, Kevin's team rebuilt part of their wall, re-supported the coping in one corner, and added a low retaining wall to the edge of the patio to keep the pavers from falling out into the yard (yes, previous company just had pavers end to grass with a plastic mulch bed edge holding in the patio). I was referred to Kevin through a neighbor and he has also completed a fairly large job at my neighbors house since (similar work to mine)."

"Great team to work with! I’m a general contractor and they are the only people I’ll use on my projects. I can trust them to get the job done right the first time whether it’s grading, digging utilities, land clearing, or installing septic tanks, etc"

"Watkins is great to work with. Everyone I had contact with was very professional, helpful and informative. They were determined to get the job done exactly the way I wanted it done. They communicated with me at every step of the process and were happy to answer any questions that I had. They took the time to get every detail right. Our new outdoor space turned out to be better than we had imagined. I will use Watkins for all of my outdoor projects moving forward."

"I've worked with Nick and Yaardvack for 6 years now. They've been thoroughly honest and transparent with me in every interaction. I recently had them do some landscaping for me and they replaced several dead evergreen trees in my backyard. They did a great job, made sure the site was cleaned up and everything was presentable. They also went above and beyond and adjusted some of my sprinklers for me to ensure the new trees were getting adequate coverage. Pricing for the work was fair and they followed through with support when I needed their expertise on proper plant care. Really appreciate doing business with an honest company like them and they've earned my business for the past six years and going forward."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Tree experts don’t advise against digging through tree roots, but instead encourage caution and consultation with a local arborist to make sure you don’t damage the tree’s structure or interrupt its water or nutrient intake. An arborist can recommend specific practices when digging and help prune the roots or dig a trench for utilities with a tool that can remove soil without touching the tree’s roots.

Because decomposed granite is a durable material, a crushed rock or gravel base is optional as long as the DG is properly installed and compacted. However, installing a base is a good idea because it will ensure proper drainage and stability and act as a weed suppressant (although you may still occasionally have to pull weeds). Installing an adequate base can also increase the durability of driveways and walkways. If you forego the paver base or gravel underneath, line the area with landscaping fabric to avoid weeds.

Depth is not a qualifying component of evacuation. Any human-made cut, cavity, or depression in the earth’s surface is considered excavation. The hole from excavation can be any size, shape, or depth. Excavation is used to create foundations, reservoirs, drainage ditches, and roads. Long, narrow excavations are called trenches and are often used for underground utilities.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

Yes, you can excavate in the winter, but it might make the job harder. Frozen ground is harder to dig, and snow or ice can make the work site more hazardous. A contractor may need special equipment and techniques, such as ground-thawing methods, to break through frozen soil. Although winter excavation is possible, it may take longer and be more costly than excavating during warmer months.
