"These are extremely nice and responsive people. However, their mole removal service just doesn’t work. We have had 5 scheduled treatments. We are now told that we are beyond warranty after the last treatment on 8/16. We started the service back on 6/19. And now after a $625 charge, we still have moles. These folks may be very effective in other areas, but if you need mole removal, this company definitely doesn’t have the solution."

Most jurisdictions legally require a backflow preventer on your drip irrigation system. Even if you live in a place with less strict laws, installing one is a great idea. If you’re planning to use fertilizers or other chemical additives in your garden, a backflow preventer helps ensure those substances stay outside of your home’s water supply. Depending on the complexity of your irrigation system, you may be able to install one for under $100.

That pesky faucet leak can have a few different causes, most of which are standard wear and tear that occurs over time, but that doesn’t make it any less annoying, especially when the energy bill hits:

  • Old washer: A deteriorated washer or gasket is the most common cause of a leak. Luckily, it’s easy and affordable to fix.

  • Old packing nut: There’s a chance the packing nut (located beneath the handle) is loose and simply needs tightening, or it has been worn down, stripped, and needs to be replaced.

  • Freezing temperatures: The water sitting in your spigot over winter can freeze, expand, and lead to damage and leaks.

  • High water pressure: High water pressure is hard on pipes over time and can cause cracks and leaks, too.

The most common places for water leaks in a home are the fixtures we use most often: the kitchen and bathroom sinks, the showerhead, and the toilet. These components all contain moving parts and O-rings that prevent water from flowing through when the fixtures are shut off, and these can wear down over time and lead to minor drips or significant leaks. You can sometimes employ a DIY solution to replace aerators or faucet O-rings that could be causing the leak, but it’s usually best to call in a professional for a permanent fix.

Hoses can constrict over time. If water isn't coming out of your garden hose, it might be clogged by dirt, rocks, insect nests, and other debris that can find its way in there. If the weather's been cooler lately, water can freeze inside hoses and create clogs when it doesn't melt fast enough. If the water is hard where you live, minerals can build up in the hose and constrict it further.

To drain a broken toilet, place towels or plastic sheeting around the base in case of splashing or overflowing. Next, shut off the toilet’s water supply, usually via a valve on the wall behind the toilet. Begin flushing the handle to remove as much water as possible from the tank and the bowl. Don’t flush the toilet if it’s clogged, though. From there, use a large sponge to soak up any remaining water and wring it over a bucket.
