Customers say: True professional

"Smoky Top Contractor is a great crew! I needed some land cleared and concrete poured for a house. They moved quickly from the process of quoting, doing the job, and cleaning up! They are very fairly priced as well. I will definitely be giving them a call for my next project !"

"M&L best contractors I have ever worked with. Kept me informed throughout the process of work date and time. Showed up on time and worked throughout the day. Landon is a master with the small backhoe. They had to drop the 60 ft elm to miss the pool and a magnolia tree and only have a couple of feet on either side to drop. They dropped it in the perfect position missing everything. After clean up you couldn't tell they had been there. They also do other jobs like landscaping and foundation work. These guys were a pleasure to work with and they know what they are doing. I received a very high value for my money."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

A detailed soil and bedrock profile is essential for excavating in Greeneville, as depth to solid limestone varies widely across the region. Check your FEMA flood zone status near local rivers to determine foundation requirements. Locate your exact septic system layout to prevent severe damage. Finally, review your topographic slope percentage and deed records to identify utility easements and calculate retaining wall needs.

Helpful?

During excavating in Greeneville, unexpected expenses often arise from encountering shallow limestone bedrock or subsurface voids in the local karst terrain. Hitting solid rock requires specialized equipment or blasting. You will face surprise expenses if crews uncover poorly mapped utility lines in older neighborhoods. Unstable soils near the Nolichucky River require remediation, and expanding project scopes trigger strict erosion control mandates.

Helpful?

Before starting an excavating project in TN, obtain a current property survey to confirm exact boundary lines. Contact the state utility marking service and photograph the marked locations. Secure your original septic permit layout to protect your drain field. Take detailed photos of your existing landscaping, driveways, and natural drainage patterns to establish a clear baseline and protect your property during the work.

Helpful?

Heavy spring rainfall in TN saturates clay-heavy soils, causing equipment to sink and delaying excavating timelines. In the hot, dry summers, these same soils shrink and crack, forcing contractors to re-cut shifting trench walls. Winter frost makes initial ground cuts difficult, while late-season tropical storms flood open trenches. Schedule your project for late summer or early fall when soil conditions are optimal.

Helpful?

Small depressions reappearing in your Greeneville yard indicate dangerous subsurface voids forming in the karst terrain. Water pooling against your foundation after excavating signals building hydrostatic pressure. Watch for erosion channels on hillside slopes, which rapidly develop into severe gullies. Settlement cracks in adjacent driveways mean the backfill is shifting, while new wet spots near your septic drain field point to disrupted drainage.
