"We had several leaks in our steel roof. The leaks were confined to the south side of the house, and we weren't sure how many leaks there were or where they were. Pisgah Roofing & Restoration came by, assessed the situation, and scheduled a team of roofers to come by and fix the leaks. It's been a while since they came by to fix the roof, and we haven't had one leak since then! We are confident now that Pisgah Roofing & Restoration completely fixed our roof."

"J & D Construction met and exceeded my expectations. They were professional and hard-working. From the original estimate to the final cleanup, the crew listened carefully and attended to all our concerns. We had some wind and hail damage but the roof is fairly new. We had other roofers who looked at the roof and recommended everything from simply reattaching loose shingles to a complete roof replacement. J & D replaced all ridge vents and caps and hip caps, as well as individual damaged shingles and verified condition of chimney flashing and vent boots. Therefore we were able to extend the life of the roof for a very reasonable price. We have a steep and complicated roof, yet the crew seemed comfortable in working in those conditions. They protected plantings and other structures in the demolition phase and carefully searched for any stray nails that might become a problem in the surrounding areas. Therefore we feel confident in giving them they highest recommendation. Betty Ragland"

Customers say: Quick response

"Ken is a thorough professional. I'm delighted to have hired him to inspect the recent installation of my metal roof. He found a number of areas where the installers need to make corrections and which will save me a lot of trouble in the long run. And he came back to make sure that they actually made the corrections properly. I'd gladly recommend Ken to others. Several neighbors also hired him to inspect their roof installations and were very glad they did so."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

The minimum recommended slope for a porch roof is 1/4:12, which means 1/4-inch of rise every 12 inches of run. Slopes of 3:12 and 4:12 are more common and provide faster drainage for runoff. Make sure to choose a pitch that’s appropriate both for the climate in your area and the type of roof material you install. Hire a roofer if you need help determining what the right roof pitch is.

You can put new shingles over old shingles, but most municipalities only allow for two layers of shingles before you have to rip off the old roof and start fresh. In some areas, only a single layer of shingles is allowed due to the weight a bundle of shingles adds to your structure. In most cases, it’s a good idea to remove your old shingles before you install new shingles, especially if you suspect that a roof leak may have compromised the decking underneath.

If you’re building the roof trusses yourself, which isn’t recommended, it will be more affordable than buying pre-built trusses. Trusses cost more because they use the same amount of material, but you’ll also be paying for the labor, as well as the delivery to your home. However, if you’re having a contractor build the roof for you, then trusses will be less expensive, as the labor costs to build roof framing on-site will cost more.

Manufacturers, insurance companies, and municipality regulations are phasing out three-tab shingles. Because of their short lifespan and lack of durability compared to other roofing material types, manufacturers are leaning toward better products, and cities and insurers are starting to require better building materials overall. However, 3-tab shingles are still for sale, and some roofing companies still install them.

A metal roof can last anywhere from 15 to over 100 years, with an average of 50 years, depending on the material, installation, and environment. The specific metal is a key factor: aluminum roofs may last 20 to 45 years, while steel can last 30 to 60 years. Tin can last for up to 75 years, and more durable options like zinc, stainless steel, and copper can last from 80 to over 100 years. Factors that can shorten a metal roof's lifespan include living in a coastal region with corrosive salt air, improper installation (such as laying over old shingles), and failing to inspect and replace fasteners, which may wear out before the panels.
