"Fantastic! Jason answered our phone call immediately about repairing and staining our deck and was over that evening to give us a quote. He was so helpful in answering all of our questions and ensuring our deck was going to be safe to use for the upcoming warmer months as we just moved into our new house. After one week of receiving the quote, Jason and Tanner began working on the deck and the job was done beautifully in just three days. I wish I could upload pictures on here for the before and after because it does not look like the same deck. My husband and I could not be happier with the result and cannot wait to use our "new" deck! We would highly recommend Jason and his team!"

"I give Corey high marks. He communicated the date and time he would perform the work. He arrived on time and promptly went to work accomplishing the tasks described in his proposal. The job was accomplished in an efficient and quality oriented manner. I would, and have, recommend Corey to others and will call him again for home repair tasks."

"Moses was great! He exceeded my expectations in staining and sealing my deck. Shows up when he says he will. He offered to do additional touch ups at not additional charge. It's great to have someone with that kind of work ethic. I highly recommend MJ Remodeling and Carpentry. He also knows a lot of other highly qualified handyman if you have something around the house that needs a qualified handyman. His prices are very reasonable."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

While some highly experienced homeowners can frame a house independently, it is not advisable. You will need ample carpentry experience, a team of helpers, and professionals to sign off on your work to meet local building codes. For the safest outcome, we recommend buying or building a house with the guidance of professionals.

Framing most homes takes anywhere between five and eight weeks to complete. You’ll need to account for inclement weather conditions, material shipment times, the number of crew members, and the weight of your materials. If the weather is too hot, wet, or cold for the installation, this process could take closer to eight weeks.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

The cost to convert a carport into a garage averages about $22,000, ranging from about $15,000 and $55,000. Additional cost factors to consider include size, time of year, and how much of the carport you can reuse. Other cost factors include the kinds and amounts of materials used, such as:

  • Add insulation: $1 per square foot

  • Add drywall: $1–$3 per square foot

  • Add window: $450–$2,000 per window

  • Add outlets: $75–$500

  • Add garage door: $250–$11,200

  • Enclose framing: $5–$13 per square foot

  • Replace roofing: $1,000–$2,000
