"I hired Corey to stain two large decks, a large mailbox and a porch swing. His crew did excellent work, professional, timely and very reasonable priced. I will hire him again. I have already recommended him to friends and co workers."

"Showed up on time when scheduled and got the job done. Good job. The only reason for the rating was I am 72 years old and he wanted me to help him move a heavy wrought iron picnic table. He ended up doing it by himself but, he had come out to look at the job beforehand and was made aware of the heavy table then. He did do a good job spraying sealant on the deck ."

Small jobs welcome

"I recently hired Iron Brothers Construction in Nashville for tree work and stump removal, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. They did an excellent job from start to finish—everything was completed efficiently and within a very reasonable timeframe. The pricing was fair and competitive, especially considering the quality of the work. What really stood out to me was how personable and professional the owner was. He made the whole process easy, communicated clearly, and made sure everything was done right. If you’re looking for reliable, high-quality tree services, I highly recommend them. I’ll definitely be using them again in the future!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The most likely causes of a deck leaning to one side are damaged deck posts, soil erosion, and inadequate deck footings. If you’re not sure about the exact cause, the best option is to call a contractor who can build a deck to inspect the damage and recommend the best way forward.

Local building codes don’t specify the number of steps a deck can have before a railing is required, mainly because stair height varies widely. Most areas require decks 30 inches or higher to have a railing. While not exact, that roughly equates to four to seven steps.

Footings for ground-level decks need to be at least 12 inches deep, and some areas require them to be even deeper. A standard range for deck footings is anywhere from 12 to 48 inches. The minimum footing depth is determined by an area’s frost line and soil conditions. If you’re unsure how deep to install deck footings, check local building codes to find the minimum footing depth in your area.

With proper installation and maintenance, a vinyl deck can last up to 30 years. Factors like regular cleaning, minimal wear and tear, proper installation, and the use of higher-grade materials can extend its durability. However, extreme weather conditions or neglecting maintenance might shorten its lifespan. Adhering to manufacturer recommendations for care and occasional inspections can significantly prolong a vinyl deck's longevity.

Always sand a deck before repainting so the wood is smooth and ready for paint. While you do not need to fully remove paint before repainting, sanding helps remove any areas with weather and sun damage. Sanding also helps remove chipped or flaking paint and opens the wood pores to improve paint adhesion.
