"I live in an antebellum house, built in 1837. Over the past 175 years some of the bricks underneath the fireplace in the living room and gathering room had crumbled. The floor needed repairs and leveling. I contacted 4 companies to evaluate the problem and develop a solution. Luke Griffin, with Mr. Foundation, was the only person who actually went under the house and took pictures of the problem for us to see. We were able to see what was happening at the fireplaces. He then studied the problem and the next day offered us a solution. They came and installed steel beams with stainless steel jacks, leveled the floors and resolved the problem. I tell people an elephant now could jump up and down on the floors. Would I recommend Mr. Foundation?? 100%!!! And, FYI, their price was considerably less than two of the other companies."

"In Oct. 2016, after seeking three other estimates to tuckpoint/repair my chimney, I tried Perez Masonry. I was leery about the other estimates I had called on either about the expertise of the service provider, the quality for the money being asked, and/or inadequate followup to my phone calls for further information to help me make a decision. I found Perez Masonry on HomeAdvisor. I talked with Sergio Perez. He was friendly, informative, and set a time to give me an estimate. He arrived promptly, gave evidence of expertise for the job I needed, and gave me an estimate on the spot. On the day the work was to begin, he and his crew showed up promptly, did an extremely complete and careful job exactly as we had discussed. His crew was very careful and nice to work with. They cleaned up afterwards. I even had Sergio do some other tuckpointing around my house in addition to the chimney for an extra small fee since he and his crew were already there. So, I was pleasantly surprised, totally satisfied with all aspects of the work, and would use this company again and recommend the company without hesitation. His was not the least expensive estimate I had obtained, but the quality of the work done was well worth what I paid."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Handbuilt masonry fireplaces are likely what comes to mind when we think about curling up by the fire at the end of the day. But bricks in the firebox and chimney tend to be heavy, which is not ideal for homes with weak or damaged foundations.

Prefabricated fireboxes come with a full flue and chimney system, significantly reducing the price and installation time. However, if you need to replace the panels down the line, you are locked into the same model or something very similar.

Unfortunately, there are many disadvantages to stone houses. They are slow to build and the materials are pricey, both of which balloon the total cost. Stone walls require a more robust foundation, which costs more to install. Running plumbing, electrical, and HVAC through a stone house is much more difficult too, so homeowners need to seriously consider if the aesthetic benefit is worth the cost of building with stone. One of the questions to ask a masonry contractor is if a similar aesthetic can be achieved with another material.

You should use cement for a chimney crown. The purpose of the chimney crown is to protect the mortar below from water damage and the effects of weather. For this reason, chimney crowns should only be made using cement. When repairing a crown, use caulks and sealants designed for cement repair rather than mortar repair.

In most cases, painting your brick house is a fine idea that can open up new aesthetic possibilities. However, the paint can slightly shorten the life span of brick, especially if moisture gets trapped underneath the paint layer. Once you paint, you’ll have to keep up with maintenance to avoid flaking and blisters.

A mason lays brick or stone together, sometimes with mortar in between the bricks and stones, and sometimes without mortar, also called a dry-stack or surface bonding. Examples of work masons do include:

  • Brick, stone, or cement block houses and buildings

  • Freestanding stone or brick walls

  • Chimneys with wood-burning fireplaces

  • Cement block basement or crawl space walls
