I took Darren, one of the owners, out to boat, and walked him through all work needed, pointed out a copy of console gauge placement diagram inside the console, etc...
Stopped by around June 8th because I'd heard nothing from Earl's. Darren was with a customer, so we didn't speak in depth.
He said he'd been sick and in the hospital, so my boat wasn't done, but that he'd have it done by the following Wednesday, the 15th.
Stopped by June 17th. Boat wasn't completed. Was told by Darren his helper had gotten sick and that had put him further behind, but it would be done by Wednesday or Thursday, the 22nd or 23rd, for sure. He complimented me on how well built the new captain's console was built, and how nice it looked.
Stopped by June 24th. Boat still wasn't done. Darren stated he was staying over that night to finish it up, and I could pick it up in the morning. I told him it was my oldest daughter's birthday, and that I wouldn't be able to make it in until closer to 1:00 that afternoon. He said he'd still be there then, that they hadn't been able to close at noon for a while.
Went to Earl's to get the boat just before 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 25th. The transom hadn't been touched. A different tilt pump assembly (mine gone) was installed, exposed to the elements, wiring just hanging; a large hole had been drilled in the rear deck, for no apparent reason; the gauges had been installed improperly, making it impossible to utilize the console dash as intended; the speedometer had been installed against my specific orders; the front pontoon step wood was not removed and replaced with diamond plate, instead, thin gauge smooth aluminum sheeting had been sloppily cut and screwed over top, making many holes in the trim panels; the heavy trim bumper pieces had been broken off and were now screwed instead of bolted in place, and the cleats that fastened to and through them had been broken off, but not replaced; the battery connections for the engine and pump assemblies were not routed and installed to the breaker as instructed, they were instead taped to the outside of the boat.
As Darren was not there, as promised, I walked his nephew, Hoss, around the boat, pointing out all the problems. I left the boat for the work to be corrected and properly done.
Monday, June 27th, I stopped in and Darren again wasn't around.
I spoke with Clyde, co-owner and Darren's brother, regarding the shoddy work. He agreed it was poorly done, apologized and assured me it would be taken care of right away.
Friday, July 1st, I stopped in and spoke with Clyde again, after seeing nothing had been done on my boat. He assured me that he and Darren would be starting on it "in just a bit", and that it would be completed and ready for pickup that evening. As I could not pick it up that evening, I told him I'd be in before noon the next day, Saturday, July 2nd.
11:45 AM, Saturday, July 2nd, I arrived at Earl's to find my boat in exactly the same condition. I again spoke with Hoss and was eventually shown my bill. The under $700 had ballooned to $1,376.14.
I told him I was not paying that kind of money for the privilege of having my boat and my work damaged - that I was going to have to buy several parts, and spend a considerable amount of my time repairing what they'd damaged.
I then looked more closely at the bill. I had been charged for a new steering assembly, though the boat had one on it when it was brought in. I had been charge $100 for a used hydraulic hose for the trim, when new ones are $42 - $45. I had been charged $40 for the used and damaged thin aluminum sheeting that had been screwed over the pontoon steps on the front, among other oddities.
Hoss refigured my bill and brought it down to $936.65.
I said I was not paying that much for the shoddy work done, either.
He called Darren and handed me the phone. I told him who I was, and started explaining what was wrong. He hung up on me. Someone immediately called back and I heard Hoss saying that he hadn't given out Darren's number, but had dialed it himself, and handed the phone to me. I could hear the yelling, but couldn't hear what was said. When he finally got off the phone, he said there was nothing more he could do, that I'd have to come back Tuesday.
As I could not take the boat without paying, it is still there.

FAQs for pool table assembly projects in Andersonville, TN
The average cost to hire a handyman ranges from about $40 to $140 per hour. Average project cost ranges between $180 and $700, but the cost per hour and per project depends heavily on the type, size, and complexity of the project. The pro’s experience level and your location also factor into how much a handyman charges per hour or per project. You can also expect to pay higher rates or additional fees for emergency services, or around periods of high customer demand, like holidays.
Tipping a handyman is not a requirement or necessarily expected, as they should build a fair wage into the price of the job. However, some people will tip a handyman around $10 to $20 per hour or the equivalent of a day’s pay, depending on the size of the job. But it’s up to your discretion. There are no set rules for tipping a handyman service, but if they did a great job and you’re so inclined to tip, it’s encouraged and will likely be received with thanks.
Do you have any before and after photos of your work?
How long have you been doing this kind of work?
Do you clean up and dispose of waste when the job is finished?
Yes, you should hire a handyman who’s licensed, certified, and insured, if possible. States have different requirements for handyman licensing, registration, and certifications. If licensing is required in your area, you may pay more for a licensed handyman with experience than one who is not licensed or certified, but you’re likely to get a better end result for your project. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local handymen guidelines.
