Concrete can take years to fully settle, but interior concrete floors are mostly settled after a year. Shifting and settling can occur throughout your home’s life, but most major settling happens the first few years after the concrete is poured. It’s not uncommon for minor cracks to appear in concrete floors over time—check with a concrete pro to ensure new cracks don’t indicate a structural issue in your home.
You can paint concrete with paint rollers. In fact, using paint rollers is considered one of the easiest ways to evenly apply paint on concrete. A paint roller with a 1/2- to 3/4-inch-thick nap—which is basically a fabric paint roller cover—is best for painting concrete. The thicker the nap, the more paint it can hold to fill those pesky concrete cracks and crevices.
The lifespan of stained concrete can range from five years to a lifetime, depending on the type of stain used and how well it is maintained. Acid-based stains penetrate the concrete and can last 20 years or more, while water-based stains are less durable and may last around five years, especially on outdoor surfaces exposed to UV light and weather. To preserve the color and extend the life of the finish, stained concrete should be properly sealed and then resealed every three to five years. Factors like foot traffic, climate, and proper initial application also affect its longevity.
While you shouldn’t use thinset mortar on its own as a floor leveler, it can work alongside other products to help level floors. For instance, you could start with a self-leveling compound, let that dry, then apply backer board with thinset mortar to help fully even out the floors ahead of laying tile.
