While no countertop material is truly “heatproof,” granite countertops are extremely resistant to high temperatures. Some types of granite can withstand temperatures up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. However, we don’t recommend placing hot pots and pans directly on granite countertops. Even if it doesn’t scar the granite, it may damage the sealant.
Onyx countertops have pros and cons. If you seal it properly and take care not to damage it, it can make a good countertop surface. However, it's more often used in bathrooms, where it’s less likely to sustain damage. Having an onyx kitchen countertop is possible, but you’ll need to take extra care not to burn, stain, or otherwise damage the material.
Gray is always a safe bet when painting concrete countertops, since concrete is a variation of gray. You may also choose black or white, but those are much starker colors that only do well in certain kitchens.
Rounded countertop edges, like bullnose or eased edges, are the least likely to chip. Their smooth, curved design helps distribute impact more evenly, unlike sharp corners, which often take the brunt of a hit. Also, unlike pointed edges, rounded edges won't snag on material like dishcloths or clothing.
Most countertops come with a standard eased edge design as part of their fabrication cost, so that edge style will not cost extra on top of the countertop fee. Eased edges are simple, elegant, and have a classic look. Square edges are also inexpensive to add to most types of countertop material, and they look good with most contemporary home styles. If you redo your kitchen cabinets or kitchen style, they are likely to fit the new style, so you will not need to change countertops or have the edges recut, which can save remodeling costs in the future.
