The common, marked as COM or C, is one of the terminals found in your light switch. It houses the live wire that supplies the input voltage. The other terminals, marked as L1 or L2, are the outputs to the light fixtures. An outlet that has the neutral and hot wires switched, or reverse polarity, presents a shock hazard because anything plugged into it will be electrified whether or not it is on. If you touch a conductive part of the appliance, like the metal parts on a toaster, while it’s plugged in, you can be shocked.

It wouldn’t be abnormal to view all wiring as simply wiring, but wiring has different gauges and can handle different loads. When you’re wiring for 240V, you need wire that is rated at least 240V, but honestly it’s better to spend a little more and just buy 300V wiring. This ensures a margin of safety in case the wiring gets overloaded.

High-voltage outlets and GFCI outlets could cost up to $50 apiece. If you're replacing all of the outlets in your home, you could pay closer to between $900 and $3,000.

The easiest way to determine the amperage of your electrical outlets is to check the corresponding breaker in your home’s breaker panel. The number is likely noted on the circuit breaker. If that fails, it’s possible to tell 15-amp and 20-amp outlets apart by looking at them. Fifteen-amp outlets have two vertical holes, while 20-amp outlets have one vertical hole and one T-shaped hole.
