If you want to use the space beneath your second-story deck, then yes, an under-deck drainage system is worth it. Having a drainage system in place lets you run power to the area, so you can install a ceiling fan, lighting, TV, or other appliances to create a comfortable outdoor living space.

Will pressure-treated wood rot? This wood could eventually suffer from rot, although it takes longer compared to untreated wood. Even though the chemicals applied to pressure-treated wood protect it, they eventually dissipate and leave the wood vulnerable. You can delay the appearance of rot in the treated wood by reducing its direct exposure to moisture and by painting it. Avoid ultra-fine grits for traditional sanding, as it could close up the wood pores and make it harder to apply a finish down the line.

Winterizing a screened-in porch can help extend its life and prevent damage to your porch, furniture, and decor. Removable winterization methods like vinyl panels or vinyl sheeting will allow you to fully enjoy your porch in warmer weather while protecting it from damage over the winter.  

Even if your deck is properly constructed with a solid foundation, it doesn’t always mean it can handle the extra weight of a sunroom. Always call in a structural engineer to perform a deck inspection to evaluate the quality and structural integrity of the deck before building. You may need to reinforce the foundations and joists, and with decks in poor condition, it might be better to tear them down and start again. A pro can help you decide.
