The best time to clean your chimney is before you actually need to use it. For most of us, that means getting your chimney cleaned in the spring, summer, or early fall. You may find that chimney sweeps are booked up when the winter months fade and the first round of customers begin to hire them for cleanings, but you also don’t want to wait until too late in the fall when chimney sweeps might be responding to other customers who waited until the last minute. Thus, the safest bet may be the summer.

Chimney crowns should be at least 2 inches thick at their thinnest point. If the crown is thinner than 2 inches, it’s more likely to be damaged and allow water to seep into the chimney.

With regular maintenance, a brick chimney can last 50 to 100 years. However, the various parts of the chimney—including the liner, mortar, and flashing—tend to have shorter lifespans. For example, most chimney liners last between 15 and 25 years. Meanwhile, mortar lasts 20 to 30 years before it requires repointing or tuckpointing.

The short answer is yes, but the longer answer is more complex. Unless the fireplace is ventless by design, you’ll need some type of exhaust pipe system to safely send fumes and other harmful byproducts out of the house. Even then, ventless fireplaces are not always permitted because they do keep the byproducts inside of your house. Ventless fireplaces are safest when installed in spaces that are themselves well-ventilated, like large rooms with lots of windows.

Annual inspections, cleaning of the glass and vents, and checking for gas leaks help maintain efficiency and safety.
