"Not one asphalt companies ever contacted me and just one company came out to measure and forgot about me thereafter. But as to KE sealcoating, they came out when they said they would and have me a start date and did above what I had expected. Their price was exactly on budget. I was immensely impressed with their professionalism. I would recommend them to anyone. Top notch company. I’ve now had 2 projects from angys list that proved to be invaluable."

"They did a good job, but their follow-up for sealing up of the driveway was an F. They subbed it out to somebody that I eventually did not use because their preparation was poor. After it has cured they were going to seal it to keep stains and to reinforce it. They kept pushing the date off. After 7 weeks of it not being sealed they gave the contract to somebody else who when they came out to clean the driveway and prep it did a really bad job and I wouldn’t let them seal it. The follow-up for O’Neil’s was terrible. Tom O’Neil was very good about working with me on the date however, the follow-on service was poor. When they came out to do the work there must have been about 7 people. They had a full crew. It took them 2 days to do it. They tore up the old driveway, prepped and then put in the new driveway. They did a very good job of clean up. I checked them out last year based on Angie’s reviews and then they worked from Indy because I had to had have other landscaping and I was having other projects that needed done so they worked with me on the date. Putting in the driveway was great, but after they got the check that was a different story. Follow-on is the time to cross the t’s and dot the I’s, and it wasn’t good. The company that was going to seal it was one of their sub; a company they work with. The two guys they sent out they were using a high-pressure washer that was damaging the new driveway and I stopped them. They didn’t know what they were doing. I called another company and they came out and they cleaned the driveway. Come to find out they did sealing so I had them seal the driveway two days later."

Driveway Sealcoating questions, answered by experts

Though they may look similar, tar and bitumen come from different sources. Bitumen is a petroleum product—extracted during crude oil refining—and is mostly made up of hydrocarbons. Tar comes from burning down organic materials like coal or wood. Bitumen is strictly oil-based, while tar is a mix of compounds from natural sources. Both are used as binders in paving; however, bitumen is the standard for today’s asphalt. Tar use has mostly faded out of road construction.

No. You cannot use asphalt products on concrete driveways. To seal a concrete driveway, use acrylic, epoxy, polyurethane, silane, siloxane, and silicate sealers or deep penetration sealers made specifically for concrete. Meanwhile, asphalt sealers contain refined coal tar (asphalt emulsion), water, sand, clay, polymers, and additives and are incompatible with concrete’s surface texture and higher density.

What causes driveways to crack can vary by driveway material. Sealcoating with the right formula creates a protective "shell" over a driveway. Resealing a driveway on schedule helps to preserve its lifespan substantially by keeping it protected against damage from UV rays, motor oil, chemicals, hail, rain, snow, and more. If you don't reseal your driveway, this will lead to brittleness, cracking, and potholes that can eventually cause your driveway to fall apart.

If your asphalt driveway shows cracks, potholes, or standing water, it’s likely time for a repair. Cracks, big or small, let water seep in, weakening the base and causing further damage. Potholes are a sign of this weakening process in action while standing water suggests your driveway has poor drainage, which can cause even more issues. You may also see warping or buckling—a sign of a compromised base layer—or sinking pavement. Spotting these signs early on can help you save yourself a bigger repair bill in the future.

If you don’t want to seal the entire driveway using a squeegee, you can use a roller instead. Rolling the driveway sealer also provides an even, sufficient coating, although it might require more skills to control the speed and pressure. We don’t recommend spraying the driveway sealer because it would cause more splash, hence wasting more material. If anything, you may spray the sealant and go over the surface again with a squeegee to ensure proper coating.
