Customers say: True professional

"Fantastic! We had hired a handyman from SMAP ( send me a pro ) to install a new bathroom door for us and he did such a terrible job that the door would not even close. Hg came out and corrected the situation so we now have a perfectly functioning door. We now know who to recommend , and who not to recommend, when work needs to be done."

"We have a very small house next door to our house. The roof began leaking badly and we hired Chris to replace the old roof, based on our previous experience with his work cleaning up storm damaged trees. My past positive experience with metal roofing resulted in my contracting with him to install a new metal roof on the small house. The crew showed up on our schedule. They quickly removed the old shingles, tore down an old damaged chimney and replaced all of the water damaged roof sheathing. When the metal roofing was delivered they wasted no time in starting the install. Despite frequent showers and storms they worked whenever conditions permitted. They identified some problems with the roof of a small porch and replaced that roof with architectural grade shingles. Throughout, they were diligent, courteous, professional and conscientious in their work. The day after the job was completed they completely cleaned up the consideable mess involved in a job of this scale. Recommended!"

Handyman Services questions, answered by experts

You can tackle hanging Christmas lights yourself with the right tools, accessories, and a trusted friend or neighbor. You’ll need to purchase a ladder ($100 to $300), clips ($10 to $20), hooks ($10 to $15), and lights ($25 to $100 per string).

Otherwise, you should hire a trusted holiday light installer near you. You’ll pay an average price of $200 to $650, but you’ll have peace of mind knowing that the job is done correctly and safely.

The cost to hire a handyman can vary, with most charging on a per-hour or per-project basis. On average, expect to pay between $50 and $150 per hour, with a typical rate around $90 per hour. For project-based work, the average cost is about $400, though the total can range from as low as $180 to $1,500 or more. Some handypeople may also require a minimum flat rate, such as payment for two hours of work.

Several factors influence the final cost, including:

  • The type, size, difficulty, and complexity of the job

  • The amount of time the work takes

  • The handyman's experience level

  • Your geographic location

  • The cost of materials and any necessary permits

  • Accessibility of the work area and potential travel costs

Additionally, you may encounter higher rates or extra fees for emergency services or work scheduled during holidays.

Many contractors prefer checks because they’re easy to track and have no associated fees. However, many also accept credit cards (though they might add a fee to cover their processing costs).

A big resounding yes, hiring a contractor is 100% worth it. They bring expertise, manage permits, coordinate professions in different trades, and help avoid costly mistakes. A pro can keep your project on budget and schedule while ensuring quality work that adds value to your home.

In most states, handypeople do not need to be licensed to perform simple home repair tasks and smaller jobs. When projects exceed specific cost amounts, however, ranging from $500 in California to $50,000 in other states, some municipalities consider them to be contractors, meaning they need to be licensed. To learn if your handyperson should be licensed to work on your job, contact your local governing body or state contractors’ licensing board before starting any work.
