Asbestos fibers can be released into the air when the material is damaged or disturbed, posing serious health risks if inhaled. It can be safe to live in a house with asbestos as long as the asbestos-containing materials are in good condition and not disturbed. Asbestos is only dangerous when it becomes airborne, which happens if the material is damaged, crumbling, or disturbed during renovation work. While it's possible to cover asbestos tile with carpet, it's not recommended. Encapsulating tile beneath carpet doesn't eliminate the health risks.
