"Edgar and his crew did a great job. This was the second time we used them, as the first job we had for them involved the removal of an old deck and construction of a new one. They did excellent work, so we brought them back out to install two awning windows for us along with several other small jobs we needed done. They work fast, are very communicative, and do great work. We highly recommend them."

"Great experience. The team was always on time and worked hard. They cleaned up at the end of everyday and when we mentioned a few TINY issues, they returned within the hour and corrected them, no questions asked. The owner is young, but he is great! I have several other large projects to do around the house and Sommercraft is it! Great prices too!"

"It went ok. Multiple contractors in and out for many different applications. Jeremy was the foreman and made sure each contractor arrived to do the job spec'd for. Everything looks great, but a couple of items that came out less than perfect that I wasn't aware of until after job completed. Designer tile in marble shower wasn't installed smoothly in some places. Most was even with marble, which was nice, but there's a small area that is indentent. No one would notice, but we do! Also, noticing after 4 months of install, the small silve cap in sinks that granite was installed is chipping. Its only plastic, not a metal insert?
Overall, happy with the job. On the expensive side, but nice to have them handle everything. Am a bit disappointed that there was no followup from the owner or saleman that quoted us the job to see if satisfied with everthing. Once the job was done, foreman, I believe did check on things, but after spending almost $15,000, management followup would have been nice.

"Great!!! Michael Cain does a very good job when it comes from start to finish the complete package-He came to my job, diagnosed the irrigation problem and Inform me how long it was gonna take to repair it,what he had to do and it was completed efficiently-He actually finished a week ahead of schedule and to this day I still call him when I have questions-a complete subcontractor-I will recommend him for any job not just because of his skill set, but he’s a joy to work with-I hope this helps him out because he sure helped me out!!"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

If you don’t have a crawl space but have a partial basement you want to make deeper, you can expect to spend a little less—between $40,000 and $90,000 on average. However, if you’re not adding new finished square footage, you won’t see much in the way of ROI.

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

While bathrooms and kitchens are nearly equal in terms of renovation difficulty, kitchens are the most challenging. Kitchen design, layout, electrical, and plumbing needs all depend on each other for the success of the entire project, and mistakes early in the project can cause trouble later on.

Yes, most general contractors require an initial down payment. A reasonable deposit is typically between 10% and 25% of the total project cost, although this can vary by project size and location. This upfront payment helps the contractor cover initial costs like materials, permits, licensing, and hiring subcontractors. The remaining balance is usually billed according to a schedule outlined in your contract, often tied to project milestones or completion dates. Be cautious of contractors who ask for a large deposit of 50% or more, as this could be a red flag for a scam.

Yes, you can install a summer kitchen or kitchenette in your basement. They serve similar purposes as outdoor kitchens, keeping the main floor of the house cool and providing another space to cook and congregate. Basement kitchens are also a worthwhile alternative for homeowners without much space in the backyard. They come with a few logistical questions to sort out, though, like ventilation and waterproofing.
