"This was the biggest home project that I have ever hired contractors for.  I'm a do-it-yourselfer but with 3 kids and running my own business I just didn't have the time to take on this project.  For years we had wanted this room done but had put it off mainly because of our reluctance to work with contractors after having heard so many horror stories.

I must say that I'm happy to report that this entire project went very smooth and in the end the room looked even better than I had hope for.  The company owner, John, was very easy to work with and listened to all of my ideas, questions, and concerns.  His workers were friendly, quiet, and cleaned up after themselves.  Since the room posed a bit of a challenge because of the brick surface and the unorthodox windows that were already in place they included me in several brainstorming discussions throughout the project to make sure that I agreed with the approach that they were taking.  They didn't just assume that they knew what I wanted.

In the end there were no surprises and I was very pleased.  I went into this process very apprehensive about working with contractors but after working with Home Solutions all I can think of is what do I want them to work on next.  I recommend them highly."

Egress Windows questions, answered by experts

The average cost to install an egress window is approximately $3,900, with a typical range between $2,500 and $5,300, though costs can be higher. The final price is influenced by several factors, including the window's size, type, material, and glass quality. Other variables include labor costs, location, excavation needs, and whether permits or a structural engineer consultation are required. The price of the window itself often depends on the number of panes:

  • Single-pane: $100–$400

  • Double-pane: $200–$500

  • Triple-pane: $300–$800

Additional features like window wells or covers will also increase the total project cost. It is advisable to obtain multiple quotes from professionals to get a comprehensive understanding of the expenses for your specific project.

Because egress windows are meant for emergency exiting and entering, they need to be an accessible size. The smallest an egress window is allowed to be is 15 inches in width and height, with an opening of around 4 square feet.

Adding windows to a house is expensive. Budget roughly $5,800 to add a single window, and double or triple that to add two or three. In some cases, adding a single window can exceed $20,000, depending on the type of exterior wall, the size of the window, the type of window, local permit costs, and other factors.

Yes, you can always make an existing window bigger, but the job complexity varies widely depending on the location of the window and the framing around it. Exterior walls are always load-bearing, so making windows wider will require structural changes that make for a more complex but doable project. Making windows taller often won’t require structural changes.

DIY is possible for experienced individuals. Professional installation ensures compliance with building codes and proper sealing.
