"Overall the job went well. From diagrams I received before the job, I expected the pump to be installed in my partial basement since it is lower than the crawl space. Instead it was installed in the crawl space, drawing air from beneath the plastic they installed. I had had an electrician working on the house, and he had run new wiring for the living room but had not yet connected it. The installers chose to use this wire to power the pump. I learned this when the electrician came back and told me they had taken his wire. This was disappointing. The installers left a follow-up test kit and gave verbal instructions to install it two weeks after the installation in a closet for seven days. However, the printed instructions said NOT to install in a closed space such as a closet, but to put it in a central location. Close to the thermostat was said to be best. The instructions also said that the test must be between 3 and 7 days, with 4 days being the optimal. Again, the company seems to be ok, the pricing was $1000 less than one quote and $400 less than another, but the installers' knowledge and experience may vary."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

Radon detection is crucial as prolonged exposure to radon gas, a leading cause of lung cancer, poses significant health risks in residential environments.

Yes, radon testing is absolutely necessary if you suspect the presence of this hazardous gas, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends testing for all homes in the country. Radon is a pervasive natural gas that can leak through your home’s foundation and seep into the living areas. Unfortunately, the gas is highly carcinogenic and is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon testing is crucial for keeping you and your family safe from harm, so hire a radon mitigation specialist to test your home if you suspect its presence in your home.

The soil beneath your house is most likely what’s causing an increased level of radon. This is because soil holds radioactivity for a long time and it’s also what most buildings are built on. Another common source of radon is water from a source that hasn’t been through periodic radon tests, such as well water. Over time, the radon from the soil can inhabit other parts of your house like the foundation or plumbing.

Professional radon detection involves placing test kits in the lowest lived-in level of the house for a period, usually 48 hours to several months, followed by lab analysis of collected data.

Avoid opening windows and keep doors closed during testing to obtain accurate readings.
