Small jobs welcome

"I had trim around a large window that needed replaced, and chose to install James Hardie trim. I contacted more than a handful of various contractors in the area (many who didn't even returm my call) and finally decided to book Mr. Handyman. I am very particular about work done on our house, so I arranged to have a 1-hour consulation meeting with Michael (the tech doing the work) to discuss what he planned to do, the materials he would use, and methods he would employ for the project. I met with Michael and was very impressed with his experince and knowledge. On project day, he came out to our house at the scheduled time, removed the old trim, and installed the new trim in a VERY timely manner. The new trim looks wonderful, and I am totally satisfied with the result. Michael was extremely professional and pleasant to work with. Also, the customer support personnel I interacted with at Mr. Handyman were very pleasant and professional. The total cost of the job was quite reasonable too. I would definitely contact them again if I have needs in the future. Thank you Michael, and the team at Mr. Handyman, for doing a job I am totally happy with!! You are much appreciated!! Quite a blessing..."

"ADT is the best company to talk to in terms of security alarm. Being a locksmith myself I know how important it is to deal with the right people. I referred a lot of customers to them and so far they are happy with their service. I myself got one for my house. Thank you for a consistent service and great deal."

"Jay came out looked at the issue and gave me a quote to fix it. He was professional and so was his employee. They came a few days later fixed the issue with precise and increíble workmanship and kept me infomed the entire time. They cleaned up when done and stayed exactly on his original quote. No surprises or tons of extra costs. Very professional and I would absolutely hire him and his crew again. I highly recommend this company to anyone."

Customers say: True professional

"Fantastic! We had hired a handyman from SMAP ( send me a pro ) to install a new bathroom door for us and he did such a terrible job that the door would not even close. Hg came out and corrected the situation so we now have a perfectly functioning door. We now know who to recommend , and who not to recommend, when work needs to be done."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

You might assume that having two locks on one door will offer more protection than only one lock, but there may not be an advantage. While there’s nothing wrong with having two locks if you feel it’s best for your living situation, rest assured having one high-quality deadbolt installed correctly will offer a high level of protection.

Smart deadbolts are a worthwhile investment for homeowners seeking more convenience, flexibility, and advanced features than a traditional deadbolt can provide. While a strong conventional deadbolt offers sufficient security for most, smart deadbolts provide significant upgrades.

Key benefits include keyless entry via smartphone, keypads, or biometric sensors, and the ability to lock or unlock your door remotely. You can also manage access for guests by creating temporary codes, eliminating the need for physical keys and the risk of them being lost or duplicated. Many models integrate with smart home systems and offer features like automatic locking, entry-exit monitoring, and tamper alerts with encryption for enhanced security.

However, there are downsides to consider. Smart deadbolts are more expensive than their traditional counterparts and rely on batteries and wireless networks to function. This dependency introduces potential vulnerabilities, such as hacking by skilled intruders and privacy concerns. Installation can also be more complex. Despite these drawbacks, the added layer of convenience and protection makes them a compelling option for many.

Begin by checking the power source, typically a battery or wired connection. Ensure the battery is installed correctly, has sufficient charge, and isn't corroded. If it's a wired lock, examine the electrical connections to confirm they are secure and free from damage. Additionally, inspect the lock's programming or settings. Confirm that user codes or access credentials are programmed correctly and that any remote control devices are paired and functional.

Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.

Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.

Proper door lock maintenance includes keeping the locking mechanism clean and clear of dirt, dust, and grime buildup, lubricating the lock annually, inspecting and tightening the lock regularly, and treating the door with care. If your maintenance reveals problems, it may be time to replace the lock or have a professional inspect it.
