"My husband dropped an object into the toilet, causing the bowl to chip. This is in a bathroom at our secondary home, which is used very little and mainly in the summer. No one used the toilet after the chipping and no problems existed prior to the chipping. With these circumstances, I knew that we only needed to replace the toilet and that no other issues with plumbing or flooring needed to be addressed. I purposely scheduled the service call for a week day, avoiding extra charges. I chose Benjamin Franklin Plumbing from a list of possible plumbing businesses listed on Home Advisor. First, let me state that the service was excellent. The repairman, Aaron, was on time, respectful, and very good at his job. He gave me a quote and got my approval before doing any work . He was honest and upfront. This is why I rated the business 4 stars. I would have given five stars, except the price was on the higher end of the normal range of prices. The cost for the toilet and the labor to install it came to $626.00. Remember, there wasn’t any other issue he had to address with this job, just the toilet and the labor installing it! I did pay for a year’s membership with the company. This provided a 15% discount and waived the $49 service fee. Had I not subscribed to this, the cost of the project would have been almost $40 dollars HIGHER! I saved money by joining, bringing the total to the $626.00. Had I not been in a hurry to leave Myrtle Beach and go home, I would have refused the service and found someone cheaper. I just didn’t have the days to wait for another estimate from another service provider. After he left, I called around to other providers and was given verbal estimates on what this job would cost. The average price was $400, depending on the type of toilet. I don’t know how much the toilet cost. It’s just a standard toilet. When I asked Aaron how much the toilet cost, he said that he did not know the actual cost since the company buys in bulk. When I looked up the cost of this brand of toilet on the Internet, it was around $159. This means I paid $467 for the remaining parts (sealant, etc) and labor. The entire job was completed in less than 1.5 hours. You do the math! As I stated at the beginning, the customer service (other than not being able to break down costs into specifics to justify such high labor fees and materials) was excellent, as well as the workmanship. My only complaint is the cost. Too pricey!"

"Mr. Hollis arrived when he said he would. It was a late afternoon call. I asked for a quote to make the repair. Mr. Hollis gave a fair quote for the work to be done and stuck to his quote after he finished. There were no surprise charges. When he arrived, he started working on the toilet. He kept his area clean while he worked. There was not a lot of tools or trash scattered around. His work was professional. He also had a professional attitude and answered all questions. I have been very satisfied with his work and will call him again if I have other problems."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

In most cases, it’s better to repair a toilet than to replace it. Fixing issues like low water levels, running water, and flushing problems is less expensive than buying a new unit. Start thinking about replacement if the toilet is cracked, using excessive amounts of water, or is over 15 years old. Newer models are more water-efficient and clog less often than older models.

What you include in your bathroom remodel will depend on your budget, personal preferences, and the current condition of your bathroom. Bathroom renovations often involve changing out the shower or tub, faucet, showerhead, tiles, flooring, mirrors, sink, cabinets, and vanities. You may also want to upgrade the wallcovering, adding new wallpaper or paint.

No, the pink ring in your toilet bowl isn’t a hard water stain but a type of bacteria called Serratia marcescens. This bacteria can also cause pinkish stains in other areas of your bathroom, like around your tub, shower curtains, and faucets. Thankfully, it’s considered to be harmless. However, if you or anyone in your household is immunocompromised, it can cause issues like urinary tract infections. You can clean the pink ring with bleach and a plastic brush. Wear gloves and goggles when using bleach, and always work in a well-ventilated room.

There are several ways to save money on a bathroom remodel through proper planning and savvy design strategies. To reduce costs, consider the following:

  • Purchase your own materials: Buy your own bathroom fixtures, hardware, and other materials to avoid contractor upcharges and delivery fees.

  • Shop smart for big-ticket items: Save on pricey items like tiles and tubs by shopping sales and at discount stores.

  • Avoid major layout changes: Keep plumbing in its current location. Opt to replace fixtures rather than moving them to avoid significant renovation work.

  • Focus on high-impact, low-cost updates: Make affordable but impactful smaller changes, such as upgrading hardware, installing new lighting, and adding stylish but economical accessories.

  • DIY where possible: Handle easier parts of the remodel yourself, like painting or installing light fixtures, to save on labor costs.

  • Time your remodel strategically: Consider remodeling in the spring, which tends to be a lower-demand time of year and may result in lower costs.

Whether wall-mounted or floor-mounted toilets are better comes down to personal preference.

Overall, standard floor-mount toilets are less expensive to purchase and install, but they don’t offer the streamlined, modern appearance and adjustable height of wall-hung toilets. Ease of cleaning should also be considered, as wall-hung toilets are easier to clean than standard models.
