"Madewell concrete was in communication with us from the estimate phase through to completion. During the actual project both the salesperson and the owner of the company came to observe the job. They made sure we were happy during every phase of the project. This is the only company for concrete driveways you need. You will be very happy. We love our new driveway."

"Scott Pinkerton, owner of Green Landscaping, had done some work in the neighborhood of Hulon Greene in West Columbia and came highly recommended by a neighbor down the street. This is our second home. We live in Ohio. Scott submitted a design for the landscape work we were envisioning that was thorough, timely and well designed. We worked with him over the phone throughout the project. From the beginning to the end of the landscape work he was accessible and provided cell phone pictures throughout so that we felt at the end of each day we could see what was happening. The project was finished in about ten days. We witnessed the day-to-day progress through Scott's photographs and his cell phone communication. We are totally satisfied with the project and could not have been happier with the outcome. We highly recommend Scott Pinkerton's company, Green Landscaping Maintenance & Design, to anyone looking for high quality landscaping work."

"Derek and crew built a 125 foot by 5 foot retaining wall on the large slope in my back yard. It turned out incredible!! They used 15 pallets of block, tons of stone, truckloads of dirt and had the proper equipment to dig, haul, level, grade, etc. Derek has a great eye for visualization, ideas, and creativity. In addition to the retaining wall, Capital City Patios resolved my drainage problems with French drains in the front of the house and underground drainage from the downspouts. Drainage was also provided behind the retaining wall. Derek personally built block steps from the driveway down to the back yard. The yard was leveled, irrigation was added to the existing system, sod was laid and dozens of bushes and trees planted. The final step was adding outdoor lighting. It was a large project with a lot of hand labor and i could not be happier with the transformation."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Asphalt is made of aggregate materials (sand, rocks, and gravel) and bitumen, a viscous, petroleum-based, waterproof substance. These materials are mixed together at extremely high temperatures to form asphalt.

Building a road on a slope requires careful planning and will normally require a drainage system underneath to prevent flooding and damage to the road over time. Your professional may lengthen your road to create switchbacks if the slope directly to your home is too steep, as there are regulations for maximum road slope. The drainage system will help prevent runoff from the higher side of the slope from damaging the asphalt or concrete. Keep in mind that building a road on a slope isn’t a good DIY project, as a lot can go wrong.

Chip seal layers gravel and a liquid bitumen one at a time on-site, while asphalt directly pours a pre-combined mixture. Asphalt must be sealed, but it will last up to four times as long as chip seal driveways. Aesthetically, chip seal has a natural, rustic look compared to the traditional asphalt slab.

DIY is not recommended due to equipment and expertise requirements. Professional services ensure durability and proper grading.

To ensure you hire a reliable and experienced paving company, you should start by finding companies in your area that have at least five to ten years of experience working in your neighborhood. Next, rule out companies with poor reviews online or a series of complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau. Since driveways affect your curb appeal, you should also ask each company for references and pictures of recent work to make sure the work the company does is professional and high quality. Finally, check that the company is licensed and insured.
