"Travis went above and beyond on a retaining wall I needed to be repaired. When I first reached out, he assessed the scope of the project, thought about it, then sent out a quote. His quote was competitive, but what struck me the most is his creative approach to the work and willingness to do something "outside of the box". He removed a portion of the wall, used pressure treated lumber to keep cost down, and installed a new side set of stairs in place of the broken wall. He then proceeded to fix the remaining portion of the wall with cement. He went above and beyond to install sod to keep a portion of the dirt intact. I will definitely be reaching out to Travis for other masonry work. Thanks Travis!"

"I cannot say enough about how great an experience we had working with Jon B. (and his father, too)! His customer service and quality of work were outstanding. We hired Jon to investigate the source of a leak which had damaged the drywall in our closet and adjacent room ceiling. From his first return call, we found Jon to be prompt, accommodating, professional and courteous. It is obvious that Jon cares about what he is doing and he consistently exceeded our expectations. Not only did Jon find the source of the leak (fireplace cap) and fix it, he also repaired and replaced the damaged wall in the closet. We were so impressed with his work, we also had our ceilings completely done over in all rooms on the ground floor, getting rid of the old popcorn ceilings. They came out beautifully! Most importantly, Jons attention to detail was impeccable and his clean up of a very messy project was perfect! We have hired many contractors/handymen before and some have been lousy, some pretty good, and some really extraordinary. Jon absolutely falls into a super extraordinary category! I would definitely recommend Billias Restoration to anyone and would call him again if needed (and we have)!"

"The job was done as requested, the service was available within 1 day of me making an inquiry, the worker arrived the day of on time and was very professional, the job was completed within a few hours, the work done was adequate but there is room for improvement as the thoroughness of the cleanup was not to expectation as some smaller leaves and mid-large tree branches still remained on the grass and in flower beds. The price was competitive for the square footage and moderate leaf coverage and they also hauled away leaves that were already pre-packed."

"Great company. Nelson quoted a price for a patio immediately and began the project a week later. Quick, cheaper than other quotes, and excellent craftsmanship, I got all three!"

"It was great getting a fair price for quality work. Andrew and his team did a great job extending my patio and matching it to what was already there. The wall they made was exactly the way i envisioned it and the design of the cap was spot on... It's nice to see that there are still people out there that can give you this kind of quality."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.

Small retaining walls still require a foundation of some kind, typically a concrete footing. This helps to ensure the wall is structurally sound and prevents the ground from shifting over time, especially during those winter freeze/thaw cycles. The footing helps spread the weight of the wall and the load it carries over a larger area of the ground, thus assisting with stability. This is true of small retaining walls, larger rock garden walls, and the like.

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. If you have particularly sloped land, consult a structural engineer to ensure your hardscaping is adding value to your home.

Each design is different, so we can’t say definitively if you’ll need a dedicated drainage system in place for a two-foot retaining wall. However, you can likely skip the drainage, as this project is typically served for walls that are 4 feet tall or more. Even with a relatively low wall, consider drainage if you are building on top of clay or poor-draining soil types or if there are buried water sources nearby, like a well used for other outdoor garden projects.

Costs depend on material type, labor rates, and additional features like decorative finishes or reinforcement.
