Customers say: Quick response

"I do not have enough good things to say about Jim and Lori from Elite Builders. They often joke that you become a member of their family once you hire them for a job. However, they're not joking. It's true! I hired Elite Builders approximately six months ago for a kitchen remodel that involved sanding and refinishing of my existing kitchen cabinets, installation of new quartz countertops, and installation of a new faucet and sink. Lori responded promptly to our Home Advisor request and put together an estimate that was fair and reasonable. Throughout the kitchen remodel, Jim and Lori responded promptly to my texts and phone calls--including at night and on weekends. They did everything that they promised to do when they promised to do it. They made the entire process easy. I could not be happier with the end result. My respect for Jim and Lori only grew when I experienced a roof leak a few weeks ago. The morning after I texted Lori a video of water pouring into our attic, Jim and his assistant Chris were at my door ready to fix the leak. It is this amazing customer service that will keep me coming back to Elite Builders for all of my home improvement needs."

"Harrop & Son Remodeling is by far the best construction company I have had the pleasure of hiring. We were hiring for a complete basement remodel and the owner, Tom, called immediately after submitting our inquiry to Home Advisor. Harrop & Son was 1 of 3 companies to give us a quote and they landed well ahead of the competition. Tom was professional, very detailed in his quote, and was extremely knowledgeable about his craft. Honesty was a big reason I hired Harrop & Son. While the competition was ridiculously over pricing the job and looking to take advantage, Tom came in and provided me with an honest quote that was half the price of the competition but afforded double the square footage and a full bathroom, which had been out of the question for the other companies. It was clear that Tom really cared about getting you excellent value for your money. They started right on time and they blew me away with how professional and courteous they were from day 1. They made excellent use of their time and I never saw any of the crew not working. The Foreman, Rick, was excellent and I had complete confidence that when Tom was off site, Rick had everything under control. From the owner down to the sub contractors, everyone was extremely professional and did excellent work. The work completed by Harrop & Son is beyond exceptional. They truly are masters of their craft. They were very detailed in their work and anything they touched had maximum effort put into it. Very little changes were made throughout the process, but for the ones that were, Tom was extremely welcoming and was always 1 step ahead. The whole remodel was kept within the quoted price and the work completed far exceeded my expectations. We couldn't be happier with Tom, his crew, and the remodel they completed for us. I would not hesitate to recommend Harrop & Son Remodeling to anyone I come across looking for home renovations. We have a few other home renovations planned for the near future and I will not hesitate to contact Tom to have them back."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Yes, most general contractors require an initial down payment, typically between 10% and 25% of the total project cost. This upfront payment helps cover the costs of materials, permits, and subcontractors. The remaining project costs are usually billed after specific project milestones are reached or on set completion dates, as outlined in your contract. Be wary of contractors who require a significant deposit of 50% or more upfront, as this could be a red flag for a scam.

The average cost to remodel a basement is between $12,100 and $33,400. Depending on the project's complexity, the price can be as low as $3,500 or exceed $50,200. For a simple project like adding a home office, you might spend between $500 and $3,000. However, a more extensive project, such as adding a bathroom, can range from $6,600 to $16,500. The final cost is influenced by factors like the basement's size and condition, the type of remodel, material choices, your location, and accessibility. For an accurate price, it's best to consult with a basement remodeling team.

Yes, adding a walkout basement will usually bump up your property value. Most homeowners prefer walk out basements because the exposed wall that’s level with the ground provides more utility via a ground-level exterior entrance, and they can fit full windows, which adds natural light and ventilation to the basement area. The only exception might be in areas prone to tornadoes, as walkout basements aren’t as safe as regular basements during a tornado, particularly if they include large windows or glass sliding doors.

In addition to overseeing new home builds, construction managers work on large renovations and major remodels. For example, they may work with designers and oversee the construction of a finished basement, kitchen renovation, or a home addition. They may also oversee large-scale remodels, such as the update of a historic home. Construction managers step into small projects for more specific assistance, such as building budgets and compiling the team.

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.
