"Absolutely fantastic experience. I am completely and totally satisfied with the work done. We had a brand new front walkway installed and then the entire front yard landscaping mulched. This has given us gorgeous curb appeal and brought new life to the front of our house. We purchased the home a year ago and the 44 year old pavers that were there were beyond tired looking. I cannot get over the amazing transformation from the work done. The work was done in the most professional manner. After the work was completed everything was fully cleaned up. "Jonathan is conscientious, polite and a very hard worker. He is able to work with me the home owner to spread 10 yds of mulch, while I was giving specific instructions as I helped with the job. He was competent, diligent and flexible with what I wanted to accomplish. I will want to hire him again for other projects around the outside landscape. He answered my text messages and phone calls quickly to give me idea of his arrival and cost of the job. He was fair with his labor rates and we appreciated his honest effort to help us on this job. Many ways to landscape a steep slope on a budget exist. Avoiding expensive retaining wall construction is the first step. Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include: 

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.

While you can leave roots in the ground, if you don’t want the shrub to regrow again over time, it’s best not to leave any roots behind. Ensure you remove as much of the shrub as possible, including the root ball and any main roots you can see, to prevent new growth. Some gardeners opt for using a chemical treatment to prevent the stump from growing back, but this can kill beneficial microorganisms living in your soil.

Grass is the most popular and safest option for planting over a septic drain field, but you can also plant small flowering plants and other lightweight plants that don’t have woody or deep roots. Avoid trees and bushes within 10 feet of the field, as the woody roots can crack the perforated pipes. You should also avoid planting vegetable or fruit gardens over your drain field, as a leak from the pipes could contaminate the soil and put anyone who eats the produce at risk.
