"The project went very well. There was a lot to do, so it was done in stages. The most difficult and time consuming part was the hardwood flooring of the existing stairs and upstairs hall. Jason found the exact match to my first floor hardwood flooring which was 16 years old--it is perfect. The stairs and upstairs hall look fantastic! As does the painting of the rooms and the repair where the temporary wall was located."

"I worked with Nixon and his team at One Smart Project to install hardwood floors in two rooms and on the stairs. They came to my house and gave me a quote within a day. They helped me choose the ideal color and size for my rooms and offered several flooring options and types. The team arrived on time and completed my project in two days."

Flooring Installation questions, answered by experts

Concrete flooring, particularly sealed concrete, is the lowest maintenance flooring available. It is affordable, durable, and can last more than 100 years if you seal it and care for it. Far from just being a boring gray, you can stain, stamp, and even paint concrete to match your style and decor. If concrete is not your thing, consider ceramic tile flooring. It is waterproof, stain resistant, and perfect for wet rooms like kitchens and bathrooms. Luxury vinyl tile also requires very little care; it is water and stain resistant, very durable, and affordable.

Few home upgrades add resale value above their installation cost, including terrazzo floors. However, they are still a good option if you like the look. While terrazzo may be expensive, it has a solid return on investment of around 55% to 70%. The durability and low maintenance requirements of terrazzo can be appealing selling points, as many buyers will appreciate flooring that can last 40 to 100 years.

While many hardwood floors can last decades with proper maintenance, choosing a harder wood type, like hickory, can help extend the life span of your hardwood floors and reduce the amount of maintenance needed to keep them looking new and shiny. Softer hardwoods, like walnut, may not last quite as long as other types.

Many DIYers and pros start installing flooring in the middle of a room to ensure a balanced, symmetrical layout, especially when using tiles or planks. This process is particularly helpful in odd-shaped rooms because it allows you to create a centerline from which to work. Beginning in the center will enable you to work toward the edges so the final layout feels intentional and centered, even if the walls aren’t perfectly square.

Steam mops can be a better option than traditional mops because the steam can lift stubborn dirt from floors without using chemicals, and it also kills bacteria and dust mites. However, steam mops have drawbacks: they are more expensive, require an electrical outlet, and are not suitable for all flooring types, such as laminate or hardwood, which can be damaged by the steam.

Regular mopping can also sanitize floors effectively when done with the right cleaning products and techniques, though it may require more effort. The main advantage of a traditional mop is its versatility, as it can be used on any type of flooring. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your floor type, budget, and cleaning preferences.
