Since its inception by co founders William Barr and Michael Strmac in 2002, Universal Windows Direct has lived by the philosophy of CANEI - "Constant and Never Ending Improvement". This philosophy holds true in all aspects of our business, from sales and marketing to installation and service and has catapulted UWD from a small, local home improvement company to one of the largest exterior remodeling companies in the country. Every one of our employees strives continuously to be the best in the business at what they do and provide our customers with only the highest levels of sales, service, and support. We think our company's history speaks to this goal and to the power of what we can accomplish by never settling. Universal Windows Direct of Pittsburgh opened in 2019. Our products feature the exclusive UniShield brand and come with a transferable lifetime warranty on materials and labor. We are a fully licensed, bonded, and insured company and EPA Lead-Safe certified. In addition, a portion of every sale goes to support a growing list of local charities.

"*posting so you can make informed decisions as a consumer In January of 2022 we purchased full house windows and doors from Universal Windows Direct. It took 10 months, but they were finally installed in November of 2022 by a sub-contractor from out of state. These videos were taken after a large summer storm in early July 2023. Their warrenty specialist visited the home thinking that they needed to simply repair these two… however, he found that EVERY SINGLE WINDOW WAS INSTALLED INCORRECTLY. None of them were properly sealed or wrapped from the outside, meaning that water (and consequential mold) was building up in the walls for 7 months before breaking down a these windows’ internal seals. We’ve also come to learn that electrical hazards were imminent, specifically in our toddlers room (video 2). Every wall, floor, and ceiling of the beautiful home we had built ended up needing to be ripped apart because a national window company improperly installed our windows. The total cost of damages and repairs ended up surpassing $300,000 and our family of 2 adults, a toddler, and an infant were displaced from our home for 9 months. Mitigation and restoration was completed in February of 2024 and UWD was cooperative with that matter. However, customer service and management/operations at Universal Windows Direct were abysmal to work with. I post simple statements and share our consumer experience so that others, as potential consumers, can understand to make informed decisions. I urge you: know your rights as a consumer, read your contracts thoroughly, read as many reviews as possible on sites like neighborhood group pages, Angies List, Google, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau. PLEASE don’t end up in a situation like we did, having our lives uprooted and our mental health imploded."

Windows questions, answered by experts

The type of casement window you have depends on where the hinges are located, the number of sashes, the style, and how the windows open. Single casement windows are popular casement windows that use a handle or crank to open. If you have two casement windows side by side, you likely have double casement windows.

Windows that swing inward can tip you off to having in-swing casement windows, while windows that open from the bottom and swing outwards are top-hinged. If you can open your windows by pushing them outwards like a door, you may have a type of push-out window.

Yes, including the frame instead of just referring to the glass opening for window dimensions is the standard. However, some manufacturers may refer to the rough opening instead of the framed opening when listing sizes. Always confirm which measurement a manufacturer is using before ordering windows.

Window capping costs between $1 and $2 per linear foot. Since your average window size is 24 by 36 inches, you’re looking at 10 linear feet in total, or $10 to $20 per window. Labor adds another $30 to $100 per hour to the project. If you have custom windows, you’ll spend more to have your windows capped. Fiberglass tends to cost more than vinyl and aluminum, while vinyl costs the least but has the shortest lifespan and may have a higher long term cost.

Windows last between 15 and 30 years on average. The glass tends to last for around 20 years, while the frames last up to 50 years. This varies by the type of window frame material, glass quality, location, and level of maintenance. Wood frames have the shortest lifespan and require repainting or resealing every couple of years, while fiberglass has one of the longest lifespans.

Yes, you absolutely need a permit to add a window to your house. Your contractor can likely obtain this permit on your behalf. Ask about this when getting quotes from multiple window contractors.
