"I had a security system in place that had transferred ownership to 3 companies in total. I needed service on the system and received poor customer service and outrageous pricing for a small service needed. That inspired me to look elsewhere for a new security system provider. Newer, electric-powered door locks generally have a life span of five years or less. That’s thanks, in large part, to a phenomenon called planned obsolescence, in which products are programmed to need replacing after a certain amount of time. That’s also why older, manual, push-key locksets can last up to 30 years with regular cleanings and maintenance. When it does come time for a new set-up, know that the cost to change locks ranges from $130 to $500 on average.

Deadbolts are solid and durable as can be, but the pin and tumbler can still be forced open, thus making this type of lock susceptible to picking. Most types of deadbolts are harder to pick than a traditional spring-based lock, though. It requires a specialized lock pick and a tension wrench to align all of the pins, thus unlocking the door. 

There are several ways to add security to a sliding glass door. To start, install a rod or deadbolt lock instead of the flip-lock that comes standard with most sliding glass doors. Add a sensor to the door and monitor any activity through your home security system.

Finally, installing shatterproof window film will help keep the structural integrity of the glass if it cracks.

If part of the key is protruding out of the lock, you can use a pair of needle-nosed pliers or tweezers to gently turn the key in the lock to open the door. If the key is fully inserted into the lock, you may also be able to use a key extractor to help turn the key into the unlocked position. 

But if the key breaks off halfway into the lock or you simply can’t reach it to help engage the unlocking mechanisms, you should probably call a professional.
