In most cases, leaving tree roots underground is not a problem if the stump has been removed or ground below the soil. However, some larger roots may decompose, leaving dents in your soil. This may help the stump decay faster, allowing homeowners to dig it out themselves, but it’s still a lengthy process. It usually takes months for a stump to start falling apart with such treatments, and in the meantime, it can be vulnerable to rot, insects, and other problems.

Some species, such as aspen or pine, have complex root systems that can drive up the cost of removal. Aside from planting the tree itself, you’ll see additional costs from obtaining a permit, cleaning up the area, and removing debris.
