"I reached out to a lot of other construction companies before signing contract with Tradesman construction. Thorough professionals, prompt responses, no surprises! Special shout out to Hunter Lewis, always provided cost effective options for problems, always available for quick questions, timely updates on project progress, polite and patient. It was a pleasure working with Tradesman Construction for my basement finishing project and I would highly recommend them for any remodeling, basement finish or any such projects!!"

Customers say: Quick response

"Our basement windows were the original from 1950 when the home was built and we were in dire need of replacements. The replacement process was fully explained and when the weather would permit, we got beautiful new windows and screens. Very professional and personable. Neighbors had trouble with one of their windows, stopped by during our install to see if they could get some help and at the end of the day, since time could allow, M&S had 2 very happy customers! Thank you M&S!!"

"Blue Mountain Building and Remodeling, Inc. was extremely professional and did an excellent job on our basement remodel. Jason is a stand-up guy and takes pride in the quality of work his company does. It is rare to see a contractor that is as excited as the customer to see the finished result, which Jason was. The project started on the date he said it would and actually finished 1 week early! The guy’s Jason has working for him are just as professional and take great care in doing fantastic work. They arrived everyday on time and completely cleaned the area at the end of each day, before leaving. There were several times when they would come and get us to review a possible change and make some suggestions when they felt necessary, which really helped us along the way. These are the extras that mean so much when completing a big home project. We will definitely hire Blue Mountain for future projects and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them for any home project, regardless of size and scope."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

A finished basement must have a heat and electrical supply with an entrance that meets building code requirements, such as a stairwell to the home's main living space. It often must include finished walls, ceilings, and floors. If the finished basement includes a bedroom, it should have a heat source, an egress window, and a closet.

Remodeling, as opposed to finishing, means altering an already finished basement by adding a bathroom, bedroom, or living area.

Renovation enhances functionality, increases home value, and can add new space for personal or family needs. It typically modernizes older unfinished basements for new uses.

Any bowing in a basement wall indicates a problem that needs to be addressed by a professional. If your basement wall bows more than 1 inch, it's time for an inspection. Generally, a wall can bow up to 30% of its thickness (around 2.5 inches for an 8-inch-thick wall) before it becomes an urgent situation. Bowing of 2 to 4 inches is more straightforward to fix than bowing of more than 4 inches, which will require significant repairs. If the bowing is more than 6 inches, the wall will likely need to be replaced. The sooner you address the problem, the easier and less expensive the repair will be.

Unless you have extensive experience in construction work, remodeling a basement is best left to a professional. There are several tasks associated with this project that require exact precision, including:

  • Replacing insulation

  • Replacing carpet or other flooring

  • Adding heating and cooling

  • Adjusting or adding walls and doors

  • Altering or adding plumbing elements

If any of these elements is done incorrectly, it could severely impact the quality of your basement remodel and be dangerous. Changing a basement often comes with code safety requirements, like egress windows and proper ventilation. Therefore, leaving it up to a professional is often the best decision.

Yes, most general contractors require an initial down payment. A reasonable deposit is typically between 10% and 25% of the total project cost, although this can vary by project size and location. This upfront payment helps the contractor cover initial costs like materials, permits, licensing, and hiring subcontractors. The remaining balance is usually billed according to a schedule outlined in your contract, often tied to project milestones or completion dates. Be cautious of contractors who ask for a large deposit of 50% or more, as this could be a red flag for a scam.
