"I purchased my home in November. The exterior looked like it had not been cleaned in years. Ashley, the project manager was friendly and helpful when I called. She booked an appointment for a quote with the owner the same day. Two days later, Chris showed up with another guy named Chris ... did a wonderful job. They were friendly and courteous, and worked efficiently. They were thorough in the cleaning process. I have a two story single home with two decks and a large staircase, approximately 1,600 sq ft in all. It took them about 3 hours to fully complete the job ... and I had a few trouble spots they seemed to breeze through effortlessly. The results were stunning. They exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend their services! Great job guys!"

"The team did a great job and kept us updated with the progress along the way. They partnered with our town on permits and inspection and did their best to keep the surrounding area as clean as possible so that we could continue to use other areas of the downstairs. Meehan Renovations definitely met our expectations for this project - they were excellent to partner with and we would highly recommend them to anyone in our area!"

"After months of planning I finally decided that I wanted to go ahead and renovate my kitchen along with my downstairs bathroom. I did some searching on local contractors in the area and was fortunate enough to come across JNJ - I have to say what a blessing it was to come across such a company. From the day JNJ came to my home to give me an detailed and informed estimate I knew I was in good hands. Nicholas who handled the majority of the renovation went above and beyond to help bring to life what I had envisioned for months. Not only did he provide excellent suggestions and insight to areas that I wouldn't have even thought of, he went the extra mile showing me materials that cost a fraction of what I was originally intending them to and have an even better appearance. When it came to demolishing the existing kitchen he even showed me where insulation was missing in it's exterior walls and suggested re-insulating to keep my home energy efficient as possible. JNJ truly transformed my kitchen and bathroom into what I dreamed them to be. I am forever thankful for their hard work and phenomenal craftsmanship their team put into my home. Not only did they create something magnificent but their charismatic approach to make sure I was 100% satisfied is unmatchable by anyone I have ever had work in my home before. Can't wait for the next project - Thanks JNJ!!!"

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

A random orbital sander is best for sanding a deck because it is easier to handle than other power sanders and is less likely to damage the wood. Most decks are made of types of softwood, so a gentler sanding process is essential to prevent permanent blemishes. For example, belt sanders can gouge softwoods.

Both deck footings and deck posts help prop up your deck. However, footings are the bottommost parts of a deck that touch the ground. They’re usually made of concrete. Posts are pieces of wood that attach to the top of the footings with brackets. They run upwards and connect to the underside of your deck to support its weight.

You do not have to dig footers for a deck as long as it meets local code and holds up to weather in your area. If you live somewhere that experiences high winds and earthquakes, you may need to dig for your deck posts. Deck blocks, post anchors with base plates, and helical pile systems are the three no-dig deck post options you can choose from if local code permits.

Rot loves moisture, so deck rot typically impacts the parts of a board that stay wet. This includes the underside of boards, in addition to support posts and joists. However, any part of a board can rot, given the right conditions.
