While peel-and-stick wallpapers require no time to cure, the adhesives for other types of papers will take a day or two to dry and up to three weeks to fully cure. The differences are the type of paper, the type of adhesive, and the humidity and temperature in the space. 

Most experts would not recommend hanging wallpaper over existing wallpaper more than twice. Even if the walls are in good condition and primed well, that third layer of wallpaper could cause problems with adhesion. Your peel-and-stick wallpaper can fall off for multiple reasons, including high humidity levels, extreme temperature changes, poor installation, and even the wall surface. Textured walls can prevent the adhesive from fully sticking to the wall, making it more likely for the wallpaper to peel off. Low-quality wallpapers with weaker adhesives are also more likely to fall off prematurely.

Many types of peel-and-stick wallpaper can hold up to environments with some level of moisture, such as bathrooms—especially peel-and-stick wallpapers made of vinyl or polyester. However, if you’re considering wallpapering a bathroom that sees a lot of moisture, like a kids’ bathroom or a full bathroom with a steamy shower and inadequate ventilation, even the highest quality wallpapers will peel.

While textured walls can elevate a space in many ways, there are a couple of downsides to consider. Namely, they’re hard to clean, and some textures fall out of fashion quickly. Make sure to consider all your options to find one you truly love before diving in.
