If you don’t want to sand your bathroom cabinets before painting, it’s possible to make it work. However, sanding the cabinets for a long-lasting paint job is always best. Make sure your cabinets are in good shape, choose high-quality paint, and use a deglosser. The deglosser strips the paint, varnish, or stain from the cabinets to give you a clean slate to work from.

Liquid sandpaper is a solvent used to soften existing layers of paint and make them porous enough that you can effectively apply a new coat of paint. You rub the liquid sandpaper on, wait for it to work, and wipe it off—no literal sanding is involved. Liquid sandpaper can save time and is helpful if parts of the cabinet are hard to reach with standard sandpaper. However, like paint stripper, liquid sandpaper creates dangerous fumes and must be used with care indoors. And unlike sanding, it can’t fix any scratches or dings in your cabinets.

For most purposes, you should go with wood that’s at least 3/4-inch thick for DIY closet shelves. This is the standard thickness for solid wood or MDF shelving and should be able to hold a good amount of weight (around 80 pounds for MDF and 130 pounds for plywood). If you’re storing tools, camera equipment, or other heavier items, you can go up to 1 1/4-inch thickness for maximum strength and durability.

Cabinets typically don't require complex cutting or even complex joinery. Of course, some custom cabinets may include these things, but constructing high-quality and attractive cabinets is something that DIYers with moderate skills can handle. Building cabinets isn't hard. However, it's essential to take your time, at least on the first few, to get the hang of it.

Garage cabinets are different from interior cabinets because they typically hold heavier tools and face more extreme temperature changes since they’re outside your heating and cooling system. For that reason, many homeowners opt for heavy-duty cabinet materials, like metal or steel. However, wood cabinets also work well in a garage for storing lighter items like garden supplies, protective gear, and small tools.
