"I needed a contractor for a bathroom remodel for a shower leaking into my kitchen. Rich and Greg from Red Rooster not only run a top notch company, (with the help of Kevin and Joey,) they are serious professionals. From their attention to detail, and use of quality materials, to their kindness and willingness to address any concerns, working with them was a great pleasure. I will be using them for any and all future remodels. And Kevin deserves his own review, his tile work is so beautiful and meticulous and I am so thankful I found these guys!"

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

When cleaning porcelain tiles, avoid products that contain ammonia, bleach, and other harsh chemicals. Acid-based cleansers can damage the tile, though you can clean them with a diluted mixture of one-quarter cup white vinegar mixed with one gallon of hot water. It is important always to use a soft-bristled brush or sponge, since hard bristles and steel wool can scratch the tile.

Add a T-shaped spacer to each corner of a tile when placing it. You’ll want to nudge the tiles closer together so the spacers are touching each corner. When you’re done installing your tile, you can remove each spacer, wash them, and use them for your next project.

If you’re out of spacers for your tile installation, you can use pennies. Each time you place a tile, stick the pennies around the edges (on the sides and the corners). Like working with spacers, you’ll want the same amount of space around each tile before they set.

It’s not a good idea to lay tile and grout on the same day. The adhesive or thin-set that sticks the tiles to the surface needs plenty of time to dry before you can grout. Wait for 24 to 48 hours, depending on moisture levels in the space. The tiles can become misaligned and more prone to damage if you don’t wait.

Grout and caulk are commonly used together, especially in bathrooms. Grout goes between the tiles and keeps them sturdy and in place on the walls or floor. Caulk goes in corners or where two different materials meet (like where the bathtub meets the tile) to create a waterproof seal. However, they are not interchangeable—you shouldn't use caulk to adhere tile and shouldn’t use mortar if you need a waterproof seal.
