"A superior company. They follow through on their commitments. They have long time employees with great experience. BWN waterproofed our leaky basement about 10 years ago. No problems for almost a decade. After a recent weekend downpour we had water along one of the basement western storm-facing walls. We called and opened a service ticket with Gary. They called back in a little over a day and scheduled a repair at our convenience. Joe, a long time employee, very courteous, professional, and respectful, arrived on the job. He had reviewed our prior project and knew the property well. And it was a window well drain that had clogged. Luckily, it was easily unclogged and the problem was completely solved. We have always been pleased with the work and response of this locally owned business."

"I'm not fully moved into the home yet, but I will update when I am there permanently. The crew was very professional, worked diligently, cleaned up after every day of work (three day job--french drain expansion, two additional sump pumps installed, window drains into the sump pumps, pretty extensive job)."

"Brent responded quickly and scheduled a time to take measurements and discuss the project. He provided a very reasonable and detailed estimate for the work we wanted completed. We had two small retaining walls built that would drain any runoff away from the house, and the area under the deck (in front of the basement door) filled with colored stone. He kept us informed leading up to the start of the project. Matt and the crew did an excellent job with the work. The project turned out even better than we were hoping. I would absolutely recommend Environmental Concepts Landscaping LLC for hardscape/landscape projects."

Small jobs welcome

"I hired David Sauder renovations to make some improvements to my mothers house (interior and exterior) prior to selling the property, and then followed up with home-inspection repairs during the sales process. Work consisted of replacing a bathroom vanity, kitchen sink and associated plumbing, repairing plumbing leaks to exterior faucets, building new walls in the basement bathroom, minor exterior repairs to vinyl siding, and installing GFCI outlets. In addition, he managed the 1/2 acre property with grounds keeping services (grass cutting, bush trimming and removal, and mulch spreading). ALL work was coordinated from over 300 miles away through my realtor. What was MOST impressive was Davids dependability. When he said he was going to be there - he was there. He was direct and honest about costs, timing and value. A very professional contractor!"

Drain Pipe Installation questions, answered by experts

There are several ways to tell if your gutter downspout drain is backed up. The most obvious sign is when you see water flowing over your gutter edges. This can occur during everything from light rain to a rainstorm. Additional signs can include peeling paint around your downspout, visible dirt around your downspout, and moisture on the side of the house. If you're having ongoing problems with clogs caused by a poorly designed or worn-out gutter system, consider getting a quote for gutter replacement cost.

It is generally not recommended to pour hot or boiling water down a drain to unfreeze pipes due to significant risks. In some cases, the sudden temperature change can cause more ice buildup or produce steam, which increases pressure and could cause the pipe to burst, leading to costly damage and potential burn injuries. While hot water might help with a partially frozen drainpipe, it is unlikely to thaw a completely blocked water pipe further down the system. Additionally, boiling water can damage plastic pipes over time. Safer and more effective methods include using a space heater near the frozen section or applying hot towels directly to the pipe.

Your sewer line can get grimy quickly. To prevent sludge buildup in your sewer line, pour a mixture of 1/3 cup of vinegar and 1/3 cup of baking soda down each drain in your home once a month. After about 30 minutes, flush the drain with hot water.

Some plumbers recommend 3/4 cup of bleach instead to clean any germs and bacteria that may build up in your sewer line. But this won’t break down any active clogs, and it cannot be combined with vinegar, as the mixture will create a toxic, hazardous gas.

Yes, flushing a clogged toilet can make it overflow. While flushing the toilet may push enough pressure through the system to dislodge the clog, this is unlikely. Your best bet is to use a plunger and hope the suction can break up whatever is blocking the pipe. If this doesn’t work, use a plumbing auger or call a pro to help.

A two-way cleanout can help if there’s already a clog, but the best strategy to prevent one is by not rinsing grease, oil, or fat down your drains, not flushing or rinsing coffee grounds or egg shells down your drains, flushing only human waste and toilet paper (so no diapers, period products, bathroom wipes, or paper towels), and using drain guards on all of your drains.
