"I was only able to select one category but I hired Pontius Landscape and Repair to do several projects at my home. Interior painting, epoxy garage floor, landscaping, power washing and installation of a new bluestone sidewalk. Steve has a great work ethic, is reliable, very knowledgeable, detail oriented and stands behind his work. I highly recommend Pontius Landscape and Repair and will continue to use their services in the future."

"Nothing bad to say In the past I did a number on my wall hanging a T.V. on it thinking this is easy. Spent 2 years looking at a screen that had a slight tilt to the left. I never got over it ,it always bothers me. And when I mover the movers took down the t.v. and mount and laughed at the amount of holes in the wall Not to mention I had to pay to fix it out of my security deposit. One of the movers recommended mounts r Us so figured why not just make my life a bit easier. It was easy I made the call schedule a text to come out The job was don't in less then an hour Nice guy who obviously knew what he was doing. Now I can sit and watch a straight and level TV with no wires hanging all over the place. This is definitely worth the cost of service. I recommend getting it done professionally yes there is a difference"

Caulking Services questions, answered by experts

Handypeople usually don’t hold trade licenses, so they typically aren’t qualified to tackle projects involving installing or making alterations to plumbing or electrical lines. Below are some jobs that a handyperson usually won’t be able to complete:

  • Installing plumbing for a new kitchen or bathroom

  • Replacing plumbing pipes

  • Installing or repairing septic systems

  • Running new electrical wiring

  • Installing a subpanel

While handypeople do not need to be licensed in many places, you should only hire insured pros for any home improvement work. Your handyperson should have active liability coverage that protects them and you in the case of an error or accident. Furthermore, if they have employees on your property, they should also have workers’ compensation insurance. If you hire an individual or a company that is not insured and they damage your property, have an accident while on the job, or become injured on your property without insurance, you can be held financially liable.

Most professional appliance removal companies will not expect a tip, but offering one is a good way to show appreciation for a job well done. A tip of 10% to 20% is a good idea if your professionals are working in the rain or snow, if they take extra care not to damage your walls and furniture in the removal process, or if they need to maneuver the appliance through tight spaces or up or down stairs to get it out of your home.

Before hiring a handyperson, it's important to ask several questions to ensure they are the right fit for the job. Key areas to cover include their experience, logistics, and job specifics.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • What kind of work do you specialize in?

  • How long have you been doing this kind of work?

  • Are you licensed and insured?

  • Do you have references?

  • Can you provide before-and-after photos of your work?

Estimates and Contracts:

  • Do you charge for estimates?

  • Will you provide a written estimate and contract?

  • Does the estimate cover both labor and materials?

  • How much do you expect materials to cost?

Project Details and Guarantees:

  • When can you start the job, and how long do you expect it to take?

  • Do you provide a guarantee for your work?

  • Will you handle cleanup and waste disposal after the job is finished?

  • Do you have any questions about the projects on my list?

In most states, handypeople do not need to be licensed to perform simple home repair tasks and smaller jobs. When projects exceed specific cost amounts, however, ranging from $500 in California to $50,000 in other states, some municipalities consider them to be contractors, meaning they need to be licensed. To learn if your handyperson should be licensed to work on your job, contact your local governing body or state contractors’ licensing board before starting any work.
