"Michael did an excellent job cleaning our dryer duct vent - the proof was in the before and after photos - amazing! He was pleasant, professional and explained each step in the process. He went above and beyond to ensure he removed all of the lint. The cleaning took less than an hour. I would highly recommend and will us this service again. Thanks so much, Michael!"

"Did a great job, I talked to 3 different contractors, glad I did Chuck educated me every step of the way. Secco Home services ripped me off for $800 to diagnose and charge my system then came back with a equipment quote that would have been wrong for the situation. Avoid Secco at all cost. Call Total Heating and Cooling!!"

"A technician from Thomas Edison Electric was available to come to our home on the same day of my request for project quotes. He was able to problem solve the issue and prepared a quote for upgrading the electric vehicle charger. We have not yet decided to do the upgrade but much appreciated the consultation and quote."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Whether an HVAC damper should be open or closed depends on the season, the zone it controls, and the temperature in that zone. In the summer, open upstairs dampers and close lower-level dampers to get the most efficient cooling possible. In the winter, do the opposite. Cool air will naturally flow down to lower levels, while warm air will rise. This keeps your system from working harder and helps prevent common AC problems.

The standard rule for return duct sizing is that the return vent should be the same size or larger than the supply vent. This will ensure balanced airflow in your home and reduce strain on your HVAC system.

Yes, a mini split AC system can replace central air—and quite easily, too. Since mini splits don’t require ductwork, homeowners can convert their central air system to a mini split to save money and energy. Consult with an HVAC professional to learn more about the process of replacing your central air with a mini split.

An HVAC system typically lasts between 10 and 30 years, with an average lifespan of 15 to 25 years. The longevity of the system is influenced by factors such as the quality of the unit, usage frequency, local climate, and how well it is maintained. Regular maintenance, including cleaning, filter replacements, and professional inspections, can help maximize its lifespan. Different components within the system have varying life expectancies. For example:

  • Furnaces: 15 to 30 years

  • Boilers: 20 to 35 years

  • Air Conditioners (AC units): 12 to 20 years

  • Heat Pumps: 10 to 20 years

  • Ductless Mini-Splits: 10 to 30 years

If you have central air conditioning, it’s fine to run your AC all day if that’s what you want—as long as the AC unit is in good condition. But if your AC runs constantly when you don’t want it to, there may be a problem with your system (like the ones we’ve mentioned above). Window AC units and wall air conditioners aren’t as powerful as central AC, so you should only run those kinds of air conditioners for eight to 12 hours at a time.
