"After I had spoken with a customer service rep, LeShawn, the manager, told me they could not refund my money. I had pages full of documentation in the form of electronic bills, names and dates of Verizon employees I'd spoken with, a ticket number, and an email from Verizon thanking me for returning the equipment one week after I canceled service; all to no avail. They weren't refunding my money. They said the account was closed and the check probably already sent, so I asked for a confirmation number that indeed the account was closed or some verification that a check was issued. He used the in-store phone to call some Verizon dept. to allegedly get me the confirmation number. He allowed me to stand there waiting for a half hour, listening to some canned recording, while he made a personal call. I finally asked him to call or text me with the confirmation number and he said that if I left, he would do no such thing. I left. This is not professionalism. I wonder if he would have behaved differently if this wasn't the only equipment return store in the area. Unless you enjoy wasting your time being lied to and jerked around, you'd be better off avoiding this place."

Landline Phone Service questions, answered by experts

The average cost for a single landline in your home is around $24 per month, but some carriers offer lines for between $12 and $40 per month. If you also want access to cable TV and internet, it’s often more affordable to bundle services with a single carrier. The average cost for all three is around $80 per month, and prices for different bundles range from $50 to $150 or more, depending on what’s included.

For the average home office, you should only need one line. It’s uncommon to need more than one business line for a small or starting business. The exception is for the hard workers who manage multiple businesses out of their home and want a separate line for each to keep everything separate. In that case, it’s relatively easy to add another line with VoIP, but significantly more expensive for an analog/hardwired phone system.

Regular software updates, checking for loose connections, and protecting wires from physical damage help prevent issues.

You can check with neighbors to see which phone service—if any—they have and whether or not they’re satisfied with the service. It might be faster and yield better results, though, to use the tool above to search for the top-rated phone service providers in your area. To double-check the quality of service, you can read through online reviews for each provider.

Types of networks include wired Ethernet for stability, wireless networks for convenience, and powerline networks that use a home's electrical wiring for data transfer. Choose based on your specific internet usage needs.
